Senior Design Manager (Façade)

Location: Site-based in Cambridge (4 days per week), with flexibility for 1 working-from-home day

Contract Type: Permanent, Full-Time

Start Time: 7am

Pay Rate: £41 per hour

Key Responsibilities:

1. Lead and manage the design process for façade packages in major construction projects, ensuring design excellence and compliance with regulations.
2. Oversee the delivery of façade design for projects exceeding £100M, with particular expertise in projects that include unitized façades.
3. Manage the design and construction of façades, including managing performance mock-ups and ensuring they inform façade design decisions.
4. Collaborate with Façade Consultants, Façade Sub-contractors, and other project stakeholders to achieve timely and cost-effective solutions for complex façade challenges.
5. Manage the façade design process for high-risk buildings (over 18m and habitable), ensuring full compliance with the Building Safety Act and other relevant safety regulations.
6. Manage a team of design professionals and subcontractors to deliver high-quality façade designs and oversee the installation and commissioning stages.
7. Provide strategic leadership to the façade design team and support the development and mentoring of junior staff.
8. Maintain a high level of communication and collaboration with both internal and external stakeholders, ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
9. Ensure designs adhere to project specifications and regulatory compliance, managing any risks associated with façade design and safety.
10. Provide technical expertise and guidance to the project team, ensuring that design solutions are both innovative and practical.

Key Requirements:

1. Minimum of 8 years in a Design Manager role for a Tier 1 Main Contractor in the UK, with demonstrable experience delivering complex and large-scale projects.
2. Proven track record of managing the delivery of façade design packages for major projects valued over £100M.
3. Specific experience in delivering façade packages exceeding £30M, including unitized façades, and managing large-scale European Façade Sub-contractors.
4. Experience managing Façade Consultants and leading collaboration efforts with Façade Sub-contractors to deliver a coordinated and efficient design process.
5. Experience in delivering projects considered ‘High-Risk Buildings’ under the Building Safety Act (over 18m and habitable).
6. Experience in delivering façade performance mock-ups and using them to inform design decisions.

Qualifications:

1. Degree qualified in a technical discipline relevant to façade design (e.g., Architecture, Structural Engineering, Civil Engineering).
2. Professionally chartered to a relevant body (e.g., RIBA, IStructE, CIBSE, etc.), with the ability to demonstrate competence to the Building Safety Regulator as part of approvals under the Building Safety Act.
