The Princess Alexandra Hospital NHS Trust provides a full range of general acute, outpatient and diagnostic services at The Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow, the Herts and Essex Hospital in Bishops Stortford, and St Margarets Hospital in Epping. We employ 4,000 people and serve a local population of around 350,000 people living in west Essex and east Hertfordshire. Our extended catchment area incorporates a population of up to 500,000.
Job Overview
We are looking for a dynamic and forward-thinking Consultant Ophthalmologist - Vitreo Retinal Surgeon to complete a supportive team of specialists covering East Herts and West Essex. The post holder will be required to perform a range of vitreoretinal appointments and surgeries on patients with elective VR conditions (e.g., macular holes, ERMs, VMT). You will also have involvement in General Ophthalmology treatment protocols. The post holder will deliver high quality clinical care to patients attending the ophthalmology service in the following areas:
- Elective and emergency vitreoretinal surgery
- Vitreoretinal clinics
- High volume phacoemulsification under topical anaesthesia if applicable
Minimum Requirements
To be successful in this role, applicants will be expected to have an excellent clinical quality record and be able to demonstrate the ability to perform efficiently in clinics/theatre. Experience working as an Ophthalmology Consultant is required. Applicants must have also completed at least one year fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery.
Qualifications
Essential criteria- FRCS Ophth
- Vitreoretinal experience
- Higher Degree MD(Res) or PhD in a field related to the specialty
Experience
Essential criteria- Experience in the management of Eye emergencies, ocular trauma, and acute general ophthalmic emergencies
- Ability to perform day case cataract surgery independently (including complex cases)
- Relevant experience in the NHS with related subspecialty interests
Skills
Essential criteria- Experience of supervising trainees and teaching to an MDT
- Previous formal teaching experience at the undergraduate and postgraduate level
- Participating Audit / Clinical Governance
