As a Design Manager you will lead and oversee design projects within the electricity transmission and distribution sectors across the UK, Middle East, and Australia. The role could be based anywhere in the UK and would be remote with visits to clients and office when required. Working closely with the Leadership Team, you will manage engineering design activities, ensuring compliance with best practices and local regulations. You will also provide project management services, support work-winning initiatives, and contribute to tendering efforts. This is a client-facing role requiring strong leadership and technical expertise.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support the Global Lead for Power Distribution and Renewables and/or Country Lead in evaluating project approvals.
- Oversee the delivery of EHV/HV/MV and LV projects, ensuring successful execution and compliance.
- Stay up to date with industry technical policies and standards to ensure best practices.
- Serve as the Technical Lead for all projects, managing contract design activities and aligning with investment and customer timelines.
- Maintain regular client communication, providing project updates and participating in portfolio reviews and project kick-off meetings.
- Ensure accurate project documentation, including forecasts, work programs, and briefs.
- Coordinate with audit teams to ensure quality control and compliance, addressing non-conformances.
- Conduct post-project lessons learned reviews, identifying opportunities for process improvements.
- Collaborate with various internal departments to facilitate efficient project execution.
- Ensure internal KPIs, SLAs, and timelines are met within the project lifecycle.
- Manage mid-scale project design processes, from resource allocation to budget oversight.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, and quality standards.
- Foster strong client relationships and collaborate with engineering teams to deliver integrated solutions.
- Lead client and project meetings, reporting on progress, financials, and technical challenges.
- Champion “Safety by Design” principles and ensure compliance with UK CDM (Construction Design & Management) Regulations.
- Support business development and marketing initiatives to drive company growth.
What You Bring:
Essential:
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 5 years of experience leading design teams in electrical network projects.
- Expertise in UK health & safety and environmental regulations.
- Strong project management and systems engineering knowledge.
- Understanding of contract management and negotiation.
- Experience with National Grid Electricity Transmission projects and DNOs (preferred).
- Excellent understanding of distribution network construction and commissioning.
- Strong leadership, communication, and team development skills.
- Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to junior staff.
- Engineering (MIET) and/or Project Management (APM) qualification.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and internal IT systems.
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
Desirable:
- Experience working with IDNOs or ICPs in Transmission & Distribution, Renewables, or Data Centres.
- Knowledge of BP106, BP141, BP106 commissioning standards.
- Familiarity with National Grid safety rules, policies, and industry standards.
- Competency in National Grid and DNO design approvals (design approver in at least one area).
