Due to the growth of our business, several opportunities for Skilled Welders (time-served welding apprenticeship - City and Guilds, NVQ3 or equivalent) have arisen within the New Build and Components facility, division of Rolls-Royce Submarine. You will be joining our experienced welding team working on the fabrication of complex pressure vessels and pipework. These components will form part of our next generation of products that we will be delivering to the Royal Navy.

Our Submarines business is responsible for the design, manufacture, supply and through-life support of nuclear propulsion-related products and systems in support of the Royal Navy's submarine fleet.

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

You will be involved with the welding of a range of materials using various manual and mechanised welding processes. We have a mixture of both manual Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) operations and multi-hour Mechanised TIG and Metal Inert Gas (MIG) welding operations, so flexibility across both types of work is essential.

You will be working within an environment that is maintained to a high standard, with clear procedures and process control to meet the quality specifications required of our product.

What you will be doing:

  • You will be responsible for welding product to nuclear standards using technical instructions, manufacturing drawings, and written specifications.
  • Ensuring compliance to process control and workplace cleanliness standards.
  • You will be welding to high specifications that will be subject to inspection potentially including X-Ray, Ultrasonic (U/T) and Liquid Penetrant Inspection (LPI).
  • You will be working with the latest welding technology including a variety of mechanised technology for both static and rotational welding configurations.
  • Performing welding procedures in a range of positions including 6G.
  • You will work within a team to resolve production and quality issues and have the flexibility to undertake other tasks and activities when production work is not required.

Your role will be an integral part of our manufacturing process and will enable Rolls-Royce to maintain our excellent quality standards.

Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

To be successful in this role you will need to meet the following criteria:

  • You will have completed a recognised time-served welding apprenticeship including City and Guilds, NVQ3 or equivalent.
  • Experience completing thick gauge welding procedure, ideally working on pipes.
  • Ideally will possess experience in pressure welding to 100% X-Ray, ultrasonic or liquid penetrant inspection (LPI).
  • You will possess experience in welding a range of materials, including stainless steel.
  • Working knowledge of health, safety (including COSHH) and environmental procedures.

We are an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
