Non-Executive Director: NSSC Operations Ltd
The National Space Centre is a charity with a mission to get people excited about space and help develop the next generation of scientists and engineers. Its activities are overseen by a Board of Trustees and delivered by a subsidiary trading company called NSSC Operations Ltd.
The trading company’s board runs The Charity’s non-charitable activities including the operation of the car park, shop, café, venue hire services, license sales and commissions.
The Board has a non-executive director vacancy. It wishes to recruit somebody with suitable skills and experience; possibly from retail or hospitality or from a similar fast-paced, consumer-focused sector.
The Role
Non-executive directors attend seven meetings a year (either on site in Leicester or online) to help originate a delivery plan and assess progress against plan. Papers are received one week in advance and are expected to be read before the meeting. Between meetings, they may be called upon to help the senior management team with matters of strategy and decision-making.
The role includes formal governance responsibility to ensure that the company is run lawfully, sustainably, and ethically. The job holder will be registered at Companies House as a company director.
Appointments are for a three-year term and are unremunerated.
Appointment date expected January 2025.
Person Specification
The non-executive director may have a background in retail, hospitality, or a similar fast-paced, consumer-focused sector. They will:
- have board level experience and be a confident contributor in meetings
- have an excellent track record of success that may encompass relationships with partner organisations, stakeholders, and funders
- have excellent oral and written communication skills
- have the business acumen to assess financial performance, challenge management accounts and ensure long-term sustainability
- be available to attend meetings and events in Leicester with reasonable notice
- have sufficient IT skills and the unfettered ability to join/chair meetings remotely via eg Microsoft Teams
- have no conflicts of interest that would compromise performance in the role
