UKAS is seeking an experienced Independent Technical Assessor with expertise in Veterinary Microbiology to support our accreditation assessments in ISO17025 labs. This role involves evaluating veterinary laboratories against accreditation standards, ensuring technical competence, and maintaining high-quality diagnostic testing in microbiology, including mycology and parasitology.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct technical assessments of veterinary microbiology laboratories, ensuring compliance with accreditation requirements.
  • Evaluate the application of diagnostic methodologies, including serological, molecular techniques, and MALDI-TOF.
  • Assess laboratory procedures, sample processing, and reporting accuracy for veterinary diagnostics.
  • Review the operation, validation, and maintenance of laboratory equipment.
  • Ensure laboratories adhere to IQC and EQA best practices, including Proficiency Testing (PT) schemes.

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Degree in Microbiology, Veterinary Microbiology, or a related scientific discipline, incorporating veterinary microbiology principles.
  • Veterinary degree (MRCVS) with microbiology specialisation or relevant postgraduate qualification (e.g. MSc, PhD, FRCPath in Veterinary Microbiology or equivalent).
  • Significant hands-on experience in veterinary microbiology laboratories or overseeing microbiology diagnostic services.

Key Skills & Knowledge

  • Strong understanding of microbiological testing principles in veterinary diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of standard veterinary microbiology methods and diagnostic applications.
  • Experience with IQC, EQA, and PT schemes relevant to veterinary microbiology.
  • Familiarity with accreditation standards and laboratory quality management systems.

Desirable but Not Essential

  • Membership of relevant professional bodies such as FRCPath (Veterinary Microbiology Specialism) or Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
  • MRCVS accreditation with a focus on microbiology.
