About this Role
This is an exciting opportunity for someone to join us as a Junior Automation Tester. We are looking for people who have graduated in either 2024 or are due to graduate in 2025 with a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Bachelors or Master\’s Degree, wanting to further develop their skills.
You will be based in the Digital, Data and Technology Directorate at the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) who are responsible for Intellectual Property Rights (patents, trademarks, registered designs and copyright) within the UK. This is a 2-year Digital, Data and Technology Graduate Scheme. Dependant on business needs and performance, there may be a possibility of permanency.
During the 2 years you will develop both your technical and personal skills via an in-house training programme and on job experience acquired by working within specialist teams. The role will provide the successful candidate with opportunities to develop a range of skills from technical and analytical to communication and collaboration.
This is an opportunity for Graduates with a strong interest in gaining hands-on experience and wishing to build a career in security. Ideally the successful candidate will be a well organised, self-starter who is able to pick things up quickly. They will be an open-minded team player, who are creative thinkers wanting to innovate and who are comfortable to challenge the status quo.

Job description
Main Duties and Key Responsibilities include :
The IPO is a modern organisation reliant on IT services for innovation and effective operation. To provide services to our customers both nationally and internationally systems need to be developed, improved and maintained. You will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge cloud technologies and modern delivery processes, including AI and ML, alongside experts to deliver high-quality services.
This role offers opportunities to learn new technologies, work within a multi-disciplinary squad, and take accountability for deliverables. You will also investigate and resolve system issues and contribute to technical strategy. Training and support will help you master specific technologies, building a strong IT foundation and opening doors for future growth.

  • Test and document robust, scalable, reusable solutions using DevOps best practices.
  • Build automated tests for continuous deployment.
  • Collaborate with developers to understand code base and unit test coverage.
  • Deliver user-focused digital services within a multi-disciplinary team, adhering to governance standards.
  • Implement toolkits and APIs for integration, performance optimisation, security, and scalability.
  • Drive personal training and self-development, keeping skills up to date.
  • Embrace continuous improvement.
  • Explore innovative problem-solving methods, working in a fail-fast manner.

Working Style
This role will be carried out in-line with IPO Hybrid working arrangements where staff are currently expected to spend at least 20% of their time working onsite from one of our offices. This role is based in our Newport Office .
The requirement for attendance at an office location can vary by role so we would encourage candidates to discuss working arrangements with the recruiting manager to agree a reasonable balance between working from home and the office.
