Technical Superintendent

Reports to: Operations Director

Location: Southampton / London / Hybrid

General Responsibilities

• To act under the direction of the Operations Director to ensure the safe and economic operation of allocated vessels.
• Monitor the safety and pollution prevention aspects and ensure that adequate resources and shore-based support are applied.
• Masters of such vessels will be directly responsible to the Superintendent.

Specific Responsibilities

• Be responsible for assigned vessels in accordance with the company’s quality and safety management system policies to ensure that downtime is minimised and that the vessels always perform in accordance with the terms of their respective contracts or charter parties.
• Monitor and oversee vessels' electronic planned maintenance system.
• Ensure planned tasks do not build up unchecked and arrange timely interventions with ships' staff.
• Utilise the PMS as a working tool and, in conjunction with AMOS Administrator, oversee and administer ongoing work requests and effectively manage critical and normal maintenance administration.
• Prepare maintenance, repair, spare gear, dry-docking, stores and lube oil budgets, together with monthly cash expenditure on all budgeted items.
• Visit, or arrange visits, to vessels on a regular basis to ensure that the laid down standards are maintained.
• Ensure, in conjunction with the Crew Managers, that the vessels are always manned in accordance with their safe manning certificates.
• Monitor the appointment of Masters and Chief Engineers in conjunction with the Operations Director and Crew Managers.
• Prepare, and ensure that crews carry out, the relevant planned maintenance schedules in accordance with Company policy and PM schedules.
• Prepare repair and dry-docking specifications as necessary.
• Approve all maintenance, repair, dry-docking and communication invoices in accordance with agreed authorisation levels.
• Monitor vessels' speed and consumption at sea and in port, along with the efficient operation of cargo gear, cargo and ballast pumps, inert gas system, and tank cleaning equipment.
• Monitor vessels' Class and trading certificates with the Marine Department to ensure timely renewal and/or survey.
• Compile and publish budgets for vessels in conjunction with the Operations Director and finance department.
• Carry out pre-purchase inspection of vessels as required and submit written reports within 5 working days of return to the office.
• Authorise additions and/or deletions to the list of acceptable suppliers in conjunction with the Operations Director.
• Keep abreast of technical developments and make suggestions regarding their application to the Operations Director.
• Attend seminars and conferences as required.

Qualifications and Experience (Required)

• Qualified to at least Class II Certificate of Competency or suitable equivalent military qualification/rank and/or have a degree in a Marine Engineering related discipline.
• Experience and/or knowledge of technical management, knowledge of port and vessel operations, maintenance, Flag and Class requirements/regulations.
• Extensive experience as a sea-going Engineer – ideally 15 years marine experience.
• Detailed knowledge and experience of requirements covered by ISM.
• Ability to use Microsoft Office and AMOS software to a good standard, strong customer focus, organisational skills, time management, confidentiality and able to work on own initiative.
• Experience of successful people management and team development.
• Budgetary management experience.
