This Research Fellow position is part of a UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship led by Dr Katrina Dulay at the School of Health and Psychological Sciences, City St George’s, University of London. This four-year project focuses on improving reading comprehension among primary school children in the Philippines. It aims to identify cognitive and environmental factors shaping Filipino reading development and to co-design evidence-based, contextually and linguistically sensitive interventions with local stakeholders to address these challenges effectively.
The Research Fellow will lead data collection and analysis for a longitudinal study on reading comprehension, and pilot new interventions for Filipino primary school children. Responsibilities include overseeing data collection teams, developing and implementing interventions, and collaborating with education stakeholders. The role involves managing project logistics, ensuring data accuracy, and contributing to research dissemination through publications and presentations. Additionally, the Fellow will co-author academic papers and support the project’s impact on literacy outcomes in underserved communities.
The successful candidate will have a PhD (or soon to be awarded PhD) focusing on psychology, education, or a related field, with Filipino (Tagalog) language proficiency and knowledge of the Philippine education system. They will be willing to travel periodically to the Philippines to conduct research activities. They will demonstrate skills in large-scale quantitative data analysis and statistical software, experience in conducting research with children and families, and strong communication skills. Knowledge of language, reading, and cognitive development in primary school and experience of designing, implementing, and/or evaluating educational interventions are also desirable.
