Senior / Principal Consultant (Nuclear Regulation), United Kingdom
WSP are working on several nationally significant nuclear projects including Sizewell C, Hinkley Point C, the redevelopment of Rolls Royse Raynesway, the decommissioning of the Sellafield site and the UK Geological Disposal Programme.
Further growth in the nuclear sector is a strategic growth priority for WSP. We are looking for talented consultants with experience in the nuclear sector to join our Environmental Permitting & Nuclear Regulation Team at a Senior Consultant or Principal Consultant grade depending on relevant skills and experience.
You will have a key role in supporting WSP to deliver projects across the nuclear lifecycle – including nuclear new build, decommissioning and geological disposal and an opportunity to develop your career by being involved in a range of exciting projects.
Ideally you will currently be working as an experienced professional in the nuclear sector with a track record of providing pragmatic, innovative and enabling work supporting the consenting and/or regulation of nuclear sites through the lifecycle, from nuclear new build to site decommissioning.
Opportunities may include work on environmental permitting, nuclear site licensing, radioactive waste management, environmental engineering and BAT, management arrangements, project and nuclear assurance and compliance.
With regulation, licensing, permitting, and consenting being core to enabling major projects, you would have the opportunity to lead the delivery of a diverse portfolio of work supporting key nuclear projects, sites, and initiatives.
You will support both large and small consultancy projects and proposals, many of which are multi-disciplinary. You will support client relationships and projects, preparing proposals, managing projects and subcontractors.
This role can be based in our London, Manchester, Glasgow, Reading, Bristol, Cardiff, Leeds, Carlisle, Birmingham, or Newcastle offices.

You will be joining a highly capable, growing, and welcoming team of twenty Environmental Permitting & Nuclear Regulation experts at various stages of their careers, from recent graduates through to industry experts – presenting opportunities to both mentor/guide early career professionals alongside the opportunity to learn from highly experienced industry experts.
Recent projects we have worked on include:
- Permitting and consenting of Sizewell C, Hinkley Point C, Wylfa Newydd etc.
- Advising prospective Small Modular Reactor Developers
- Supporting reactor vendors through the Generic design Assessment process
- Environment Case and BAT support for Sellafield
- Major Permissions Delivery Partner for the Geological Disposal Programme
Our main hub for Environmental Permitting & Nuclear Regulation is in Manchester, but we have over 50 offices across the UK, and staff based in Manchester, Carlisle, Glasgow, Bristol, Leeds, Birmingham, and Newcastle.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
- Solid understanding of the safety and sustainability issues facing nuclear sector companies, primarily around nuclear and radioactive substances regulation.
- Solid understanding of relevant nuclear legislation, regulations and guidance and good practice and their application within the nuclear sector.
- Advanced technical skills in aspects of nuclear and radioactive substances regulation, permitting, nuclear licensing and compliance.
- Considerable experience of safety, sustainability, and environmental management in the nuclear sector. Experience of radiological and non-radiological impact environmental assessment, safety assessment, environmental monitoring, development or scrutiny of safety and environment cases or BAT/BPM/BPEO, ALARP and HAZOP studies would be an advantage.
- A confident verbal and written communicator you will have experience of working effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.
- You will be client focused and able to provide authoritative advice at short notice as well as a proven ability to confidently deliver to tight timelines.
- An awareness of business and project management systems and have experience of delivering work to time, cost, and quality.
- You will be self-motivated, thorough and be able to demonstrate delivery of tasks or projects to exacting standards.
- Membership of a relevant professional body and/or a recognised industry accreditation would be an advantage.
