Job Summary & Purpose The Deputy Medical Director (DMD) is a pivotal leadership position within Psychiatry UK, responsible for supporting the Medical Director in the strategic oversight and delivery of high-quality clinical services. This role is integral to ensuring the organisation meets its clinical governance and performance standards while fostering an environment of innovation and service transformation. The DMD will lead various quality governance initiatives, engage with external stakeholders, and oversee clinical audits to enhance patient care. The post holder will deputise for the Medical Director, chair key governance meetings, and actively contribute to the recruitment and development of medical staff. By leveraging their expertise in clinical governance and patient safety, the DMD will promote a culture of learning from incidents and complaints, driving continuous improvement across the organisation. Role Outline Deputise for the Medical Director in all matters related to clinical governance and medical leadership, representing Psychiatry UK in external engagements as needed. Lead and chair the Audit Implementation Meetings, ensuring that findings are addressed and lessons learned are integrated into clinical practice. Chair the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF) panel, overseeing incident reviews and the implementation of safety improvements. Oversee clinical audits to ensure compliance with local and national standards, driving quality improvement initiatives throughout the organisation and to lead the development of the annual audit plan. Foster a culture of learning by embedding lessons from incidents and complaints into clinical practice and organisational processes. Engage actively in the recruitment and onboarding of doctors, ensuring the development of a high-performing clinical workforce. Drive service transformation and innovation initiatives, collaborating with clinical leads and stakeholders to develop effective care pathways. Line manage the Clinical Lead for Transformation and the Patient Safety Clinical Lead, providing support and guidance in their roles. Support the Medical Director in implementing and reviewing training-related disciplinary and capability procedures. Facilitate investigations related to training outcomes or complaints involving doctors to maintain quality and standards. Collaborate with external stakeholders to strengthen partnerships and enhance service delivery, advocating for the needs of the patient population served by Psychiatry UK. Contribute to the strategic vision and planning of the organisation, ensuring alignment with Psychiatry UK’s goals and objectives. Person Specification Essential Areas : Medical Degree level qualification and postgraduate qualifications. Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice. Included in the GMC Specialist Register or General Practice Register. A least two years’ experience in a strategic leadership role within the NHS or a similar complex organisation. Desirable Areas: Experience in medical education and/or research. Scientific publications and presentations at conferences or seminars. Knowledge & Skills Specification Understanding of the health service and NHS operations. Knowledge of clinical quality assurance, quality improvement, and evidence-based clinical practice. Understanding of the social and political environment, including local authorities and social services. Strategic thinker with proven leadership capabilities. Excellent oral and written communication skills, including media engagement. Strong interpersonal, motivational, and influencing skills. Ability to respond effectively to unforeseen circumstances. Proficient presentational skills, both oral and written. Practical negotiation skills with realistic expectations of outcomes. Computer literate, proficient in MS Office applications. Ability to design, develop, interpret, and implement policies. High standards of professional integrity and probity. High-level understanding of epidemiology, statistics, health economics, and healthcare evaluation. Strong analytical skills, adept in utilising qualitative and quantitative data. Experience in project management and staff development. Budget management skills. Training and mentoring skills. Evidence of successful partnership working and facilitating change.
