In this role, the Risk (Insurance) Manager will be responsible for leading insurance related activities and working with other Bechtel colleagues of different disciplines to identify and evaluate project risks on prospective work and select the appropriate combination of risk retention and risk transfer (insurance) techniques. Support begins at the proposal stage and continues through completion of all project activity and until resolution of any claims arising after completion of the work. This is primarily a specialist insurance position but combines insurance and risk management experience with understanding requirements of large commercial construction projects. It requires the maintenance of relationships with clients, insurers, partner brokers, and company functional and senior management representatives. This position is designated as part-time telework per our global telework policy and may require at least three days of in-person attendance per week at the assigned office or project. Weekly in-person schedules will be determined by the individual and their supervisor, in consultation with functional or project leadership.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Has a good knowledge of the insurance industry and current state of market trends in pricing and terms and conditions.
  • Collaborates with Global Business Unit business and legal colleagues in the identification and evaluation of insurable risks arising from prospective project activities, insurance coverages and solutions for risk-related problems as well as available risk financing alternatives for applicable projects.
  • Develops insurance strategies in response to client and Bechtel requirements.
  • Initiates recommended language and proposes alternative provisions for liability and insurance matters (including procurement responsibility) in proposals, contracts, subcontracts, and other documents.
  • Participates in contract negotiations with legal partners on areas of contractual risk transfer and applicable insurance positions.
  • Prepares insurance program cost breakdown for use in estimating.
  • Coordinates enrolment into controlled insurance programs for applicable projects (in both OCIP and CCIP situations).
  • Issues instructions to all projects regarding premium reporting and allocation, accident reporting and claims procedures and other matters relating to insurance administration.
  • Seeks, and disseminates within the company, lessons learned from insurance partners to inform and enhance project execution strategies.
  • Coordinates the interface between Bechtel and client personnel, brokers, and insurers regarding insurance programs including preparing underwriting data, coordinating site visits and support duties as requested.
  • Assists in the development and training of both department personnel and the organization as a whole.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferably in Risk Management or relevant area from an accredited college/university.
  • Extensive relevant work experience in the construction insurance market.

Preferred Qualifications (in addition to Basic):

  • Has experience and expertise in the relevant insurance lines critical to the E&C industry.
  • Knowledge of risk, insurance, and liability principles and concepts.
  • Skilled in project contractual negotiations and administration.
  • Knowledge of complex builder’s risk insurance programs and controlled insurance programs.
  • Experience working with estimating, project controls, procurement, engineering, and construction teams.
  • Knowledge preferred for this position would be consistent with the Construction Risk Insurance Specialist (CRIS) designation from the International Risk Management Institute.
