Leading Civil Engineering & Building Contractor operating throughout the UK and Ireland is seeking to recruit an experienced Operations Director - Commercial Civil Engineering to join the Commercial team.
About the role of Operations Director
Reporting to the Senior Operations Director - Commercial Civil Engineering, the role forms a key part of the Senior Leadership Team within the Commercial Department and involves the provision of strategic direction and management of the commercial function through strong leadership skills to meet the business needs.
Responsibilities for Operations Director
- Oversee, direct, and manage a team to deliver the commercial function of multiple projects ranging from £5m to £200m, in line with contract requirements, to budget and in line with company policy.
- Fully understand and identify key risk and opportunity to assist decision making and action that will ultimately protect and enhance the commercial success of the projects.
- Take the lead in negotiations at principal stakeholder level on the projects with stakeholders to ensure all parties' expectations are being met.
- As part of the Senior Leadership Team nurture and promote continuous improvements with the commercial staff, business practice and policies.
- Work strategically with HR on all aspects of employee relations to nurture a culture of continuous improvement and transparency in line with the Company Values and associated behaviours.
- Take the lead on projects with disputes both formal and informal.
- Be a key decision maker and engage and instruct third party legal advisors and experts.
- Report monthly on the financial performance and status of the projects.
- Ensure teams implement the commercial strategy in line with Company SOP's and within agreed limits of authority.
- Engage with the Pre-Construction department to always ensure continuous learning and feedback.
- Influence and advise on tenders and ensure the commercial information thread is continuous from inception to completion.
- Promote company values in all dealings with other employees, clients, subcontractors, and other external contacts.
- Role model Best Practice and Innovation, through the Company Values with all stakeholders.
- Work closely with delivery Operations Directors to ensure the needs of the projects are serviced correctly and any key delivery matters arising that affect the commercial outcome are managed accordingly.
- Add value through visibility and travel as appropriate throughout the UK.
Requirements for Operations Director
- A self-starter / finisher with relevant Construction Industry recognised qualifications.
- Experience leading multiple teams on varying projects.
- Particular experience of Ports and Harbours, Rail, Defence, Infrastructure and Flood Prevention sectors is desirable.
Experience
- Previous experience in a similar job role.
- Working with different forms of building contract - JCT, NEC, FIDIC and bespoke.
- Understanding of two-stage, single stage and negotiated tendering.
- Experience of formal disputes (adjudications).
- Confident communicating with colleagues and board members / senior management.
- Strong commercial acumen.
- The ability to work to tight deadlines.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Flexibility in approach.
- Strong team ethic.
