Applications are invited for a full time Consultant in Acute Medicine to join the Frailty Acute Medicine Emergency Care Group at Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust. This is the most exciting time to join BHRUT given the focus on unplanned emergency care and the resulting opportunities both clinical and non-clinical. We are a tertiary centre for neurosciences and also one of 10 national elective surgical centres. We are in the process of further expanding unplanned emergency care services including developing patient centred pathways such as OPAT and expanding our SDEC on both sites which has received a massive financial boost.

You will be welcomed into a friendly, dynamic and forward thinking care group whose core values are the focus on both patient care and staff well being. You have an idea, we listen, support and nurture and make visions into reality. We are a fun team who work together, laugh together and socialise together.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join an existing team of dynamic acute medical consultants with a variety of specialist interests. Recognising passion has resulted in improving our performance. HEE feedback and patient feedback. We invest in the person just as much as the service. You will be working as part of a cross-site service working within:

  • Ambulatory Emergency Care / SDEC
  • Short stay Ward Assessment units.

We are looking for dynamic, forward-thinking individuals with a focus on patient care. We promote ideas and development. Nothing is impossible.

About us

We're an organisation that is getting better and better. We were the most improved Trust in England for A&E performance in 2023/24. We're no longer in special measures and Matthew Trainer, our Chief Executive, has been named the top CEO by the Health Service Journal. Our improvements are driven by a determination to deliver care we're proud of and that our patients are happy with.

Many of our 8,000 staff - who come from 146 different countries - live in the three diverse London boroughs we serve and the majority are from black, Asian and minority ethnic groups. More than 400 of them are on apprenticeship programmes and we're proud to be a London Living Wage employer.

We operate from two main sites - King George Hospital (KGH) in Goodmayes and Queen's Hospital in Romford. We have two of the busiest emergency departments in London - more than 300,000 people visited our A&Es in 2023. Patients across northeast London are benefitting from two new state of the art theatres at KGH and our Community Diagnostic Centres at Barking Community Hospital and St George's Health and Wellbeing Hub will significantly increase the number of scans that can be carried out.

We're looking forward to introducing an electronic patient record next year. This will mean the records of any patient visiting one of the seven hospitals run by BHRUT and Barts Health will be accessible to the clinical teams. It'll make things easier for staff and will be better for patients.

Job responsibilities

The job is for a 10 PA job with 7.5 DCC in clinical activity with requirements for hot week activities and 1 in 8 weekend. You will have 1.5 SPA and up to 1 SPA for specialist interest. This is a full time post in acute medicine working within the acute medicine department.

Applications should be made online; however, queries regarding the application process, assistance with completion of the application form or if you require any adjustments (for applicants with a disability) please contact Dr Musarat Hussain, Recruitment Advisor, on 01708 435000 ext. 5873.
