We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer with 3-5 years of experience. This role involves duties in mechanical design as well as modeling and simulation. Mechanical design tasks may include CAD design, prototyping, design for manufacturing, and drawing creation. Modeling and simulation tasks include Finite Element Analysis (FEA) using COMSOL Multiphysics (structural, fluids, electromagnetics, acoustics, heat transfer), validation studies, and code development in Matlab or Python. Strong skills in technical writing, documentation, and presentations are required, along with the ability to manage multiple projects and work both independently and collaboratively.
Duties and Responsibilities- Mechanical Design and Integration: Work collaboratively with engineers to create and refine concepts into detailed designs to meet client requirements. Draft detailed multi-view drawings of parts and assemblies, including all necessary dimensions, specifications and notes. Use computer assisted design/drafting software to develop sketches, models and working drawings. Support prototyping and assembly of designed components (machining, welding). Work with in-house fabricators and external vendors to produce acceptable parts.
- Modeling & Simulation: Define, build, execute, and interpret Finite Element Analysis (FEA) models to support internal and external customers for a wide range of applications. Analyses may include structural modeling, heat transfer, computational fluid dynamics (CFD), AC/DC modeling of electromechanical components, composite (orthotropic) structures, multibody assemblies, nonlinear materials, and more. Coordinate simulation requests and balance a diverse portfolio of simulation tasks to support engineers throughout the company. Build and modify CAD models in SolidWorks/COMSOL as necessary for models. Perform physical testing and/or benchmarking to validate and verify model results. Document progress and results through reports and presentations to team members and customers.
- Experience developing FEA models for a variety of engineering facets such as structural, fluids, heat transfer, composites, electromagnetics, etc.
- Advanced solid modeling skills, SolidWorks.
- Ability to apply fundamental engineering/physics equations to verify model results.
- Understanding of the design of experiments, prototype fabrication, and testing to create validation experiments and plans to support modeling efforts.
- Strong skills in documenting and presenting data and results.
- Experience with GD&T, tolerance stack up analysis, and design for manufacturability, design for additive manufacturing (DFAM).
- BS in Mechanical Engineering. Advanced degree preferred.
- 3-5 years' industry experience with mechanical design and simulation.
- FEA experience including some of the following: COMSOL Multiphysics, FEMAP/Nastran, ANSYS and/or ABAQUS.
- Coding experience with MATLAB or Python.
