We are seeking a dedicated Functional Skills Tutor to join our team at HMP Wayland. In this role, you will work with small groups of prison-based learners, delivering Functional Skills English and/or Maths, supporting their personal development and long-term education and employment goals. You will create engaging and inclusive learning opportunities, ensuring learners gain the skills, knowledge, and behaviours required to achieve their potential. Your guidance and support will play a key role in helping learners progress towards further education or employment upon release.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver Functional Skills English and/or Maths to small groups of learners.
  • Develop and implement individual training plans to support learner progress.
  • Use a variety of engaging teaching methods to motivate and inspire learners.
  • Provide advice and guidance, ensuring learners receive the support they need.
  • Monitor and assess learners’ work, ensuring it meets awarding body standards.
  • Contribute to the development of high-quality courses that engage and challenge learners.

Essential/Desirable Criteria:

Essential:

  • Level 2 English & Maths qualification.
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills English and/or Maths.
  • Strong ability to engage and support learners from diverse backgrounds.

Desirable:

  • A teaching or assessing qualification (PTLLS, AET, TAQA, or equivalent).
  • Experience working within prison education or alternative provisions.
  • Knowledge of Ofsted and quality assurance frameworks.

If you do not currently hold a teaching or assessing qualification, we can support you in achieving this as part of your probationary period.
