A Labourer’s duties vary depending on the project, but they must be familiar with certain equipment and techniques that are common to various construction sites. Some of their most common responsibilities include:
- Report to the Site manager/Logistics manager on a daily basis
- Assist the Site manager/logistics manager to maintain health & safety on the construction site
- Performing setup and cleanup tasks on site
- Ensuring the site walkways are maintained including external hoardings
- Ensuring there is no waste build up around the project. This includes the external hoardings and pedestrian footpaths around the project
- Directing traffic when necessary to ensure the safety of pedestrians
- Providing general maintenance of construction equipment when required
- Provide cover for the Gateman position (if required)
Successful Labourers must be dependable, efficient and dedicated to their safety and the safety of their fellow Labourers. They should be able to work well as part of a team but also be able to work independently on their own projects when necessary. Their other important skills include:
- CSCS card (Green card) minimum
- 1 day Health & Safety qualification
- Thorough attention to detail
- The ability to remain calm under pressure
- General knowledge of building and construction practices
