Job Description

Job description: Junior Interior Design/ Studio Administrator

www.balanceinteriordesign.co.uk

Balance Interior Design was established in 2018 by Gemma Tucker as a residential interior design studio embracing client-focused design to create homes that feel authentic, and relaxed with a sense of flow. Both beautiful and functional, our designs are inspired by nature and light and the architectural heritage and setting of each building. As the studio grows busier, Gemma is looking for a junior designer who shares a similar vision to come on board to assist in all aspects of project delivery. This will be an exciting opportunity for a talented, ambitious junior designer with minimal experience in the working world to be thrown in the deep end and learn on the job – working directly into an experienced and knowledgeable design practitioner.

About you

You will need to be organised, diligent, detail-oriented, and efficient as you will be joining a small but busy practice. Initially, you will assist the founder with day-to-day tasks such as product research, sourcing samples, compiling FF&E and lighting schedules, and general assistance and studio administration. The ideal candidate will be looking to develop their career with us in the long term, as eventually, the role will lead to managing projects from concept to completion. Initially part time for the first 3 months, the expectation is for this role to become full time.

Excellent interpersonal skills are essential as you will build relationships with clients, contractors and suppliers, as is fluency in written and spoken English.

Aesthetically, you will appreciate elegance and simplicity of form; feel drawn to natural materials and muted tones, and find beauty in hand-made and imperfect objects. On the scale from minimalism to maximalism, you are more comfortable with minimalism, appreciating architecture, light and materiality, whilst layering in some more homely and warm touches.

Key responsibilities

Directly assisting Gemma in all aspects of project delivery, which could include any or all of the following:

  • Site surveys
  • Floorplan layouts
  • Elevations, section drawings
  • Joinery design
  • Moodboard design
  • Preparing design presentations
  • Sourcing fabrics, wall and floor finishes
  • Sourcing furniture, lighting, fixtures and fittings
  • Researching new suppliers
  • Sourcing new suppliers, attending trade shows and visiting supplier showrooms
  • Setting up and maintaining fabric sample library in the studio
  • Attending client meetings and writing up contact reports
  • Ongoing email/phone correspondence with clients, partners and suppliers
  • Setting up, attending and reporting on supplier presentations
  • Arranging proformas and procurement management
  • Financial management on each project
  • Populating schedules
  • General office admin and maintenance
  • Social media management

Qualifications, skills & experience

The skills following are essential:

  • Certificate/ Diploma or a degree qualification in Interior Design from an accredited training provider
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD
  • Proficiency in Apple Suite (Keynote, Pages, Numbers)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Proficiency in using social media platforms such as Instagram and Pinterest
  • Clean UK driving license

The following would be welcome, but are not essential:

  • Experience of 1-2 years with an interior design studio
  • Good knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Canva
  • Experience with Programa software
  • Freehand sketching skills
  • 3D modelling and rendering skills

The application process

In the first instance, please send your CV, portfolio (including technical drawing work), and a short cover letter by email.

A small number of applicants will then be invited to submit mood and furniture boards (digital only) in response to a brief, together with 3 images of their favourite interiors – which will be followed up with a face to face interview.
