Newark and Sherwood District is home to multiple town and local centres, notably Newark (the sub-regional centre), Southwell, Ollerton, and Edwinstowe. The centres provide a hub for the shopping, business, residential, leisure, and in some cases, tourism needs of their catchments. The visitor economy provides key footfall, from Sherwood Forest and the home of Robin Hood to the Southwell Minster, to Newark Castle, Newark Market Place, and National Civic War Centre.

You will be one of two senior leads reporting to the Business Manager of the Economic Growth and Visitor Economy service of the Council, leading on place-making, regeneration, visitor economy and supporting high streets. The Council has a strong track record of delivery with its partners, from business support programmes to town centre events, to large capital interventions such as the redevelopment of the Newark former Robin Hood Hotel, the rejuvenation of Newark Buttermarket, the development of the former Newark Marks and Spencer’s, the opening of the Newark Air and Space Institute and Ollerton Town Centre Regeneration. We are looking for an experienced professional to continue this work by helping us shape future strategic direction and associated actions, programs and projects.

You will demonstrate a track record of influence and direct delivery to make positive change happen including examples of transformational physical, social, and economic regeneration. The role will include shaping strategy, managing and commissioning feasibility and viability studies, grasping relevant funding opportunities, and building relationships with local businesses, landlords, commercial agents and tiers of government to build confidence, credibility, engagement, and delivery. This will include working with the Newark Towns Board to shape opportunities through grant funding over the next 10 years.

We’re an ambitious, forward-thinking Council with strong values and a culture of doing our absolute best to serve our customers. We are proud of our organisational culture and receive positive feedback from our employees. We have a programme of internal activity to ensure that the voices of our employees are always heard and that they are kept informed on all Council activity and events. From roadshows to an annual award ceremony, from reviewing working arrangements to our Hug in a Mug initiative, it is incredibly important our employees are shown how valued they are and that they remain the beating heart of our workplace.

We offer:

  • Enrolment in the career average local government pension scheme.
  • Flexi scheme.
  • Hybrid working.
  • A generous annual leave entitlement that increases with service.
  • Family-friendly benefits.
  • One days’ paid volunteering leave.
  • Lifestyle benefits platform.
  • Funded health cash plan.
  • Free car parking*
  • £10 a month gym membership at one of our four gyms in the district.

You will be working with a professional, committed and experienced team who are passionate about supporting us to deliver the objectives as outlined in our Community Plan.

The Council promotes a culture of flexible/agile working, and we are happy to discuss suggestions as to how the responsibilities of this role can be met through a flexible approach to hours and/or location.
