We are seeking a talented and technically skilled Art Editor to join our award-winning art and design team, who shares our passion for high-quality visual communication of science. Reporting to the Art Director for Nature , the ideal candidate will be an experienced scientific illustrator with great art working skills and attention to detail.

About the Role

The Art Editor will play a crucial role in the production of scientific figures, diagrams, and graphics for publication. As an Art Editor, you will be responsible for both creating original scientific figures and restyling figures supplied by authors to ensure clarity, accuracy, and visual appeal. The role involves sizing, relabelling and redrawing figures; proofreading labels and other text; ensuring consistency of style; collaborating with Nature’s art and subediting teams to ensure deadlines are met.

You will have the opportunity to work with ground-breaking research for the world’s leading scientific journal, Nature, as well as joining a supportive and collaborative team.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Liaise with authors and editorial teams to ensure submitted figures meet technical specifications at Nature
  • Prepare scientific figures for publication using Adobe Illustrator to meet the highest standards in scientific publishing
  • Ensure consistency of style with diagrams, regarding typeface, type size and the overall style of Nature
  • Check files for accuracy and legibility
  • Redraw scientific figures in Nature house-style from author sketches

Experience, Skills & Qualifications:

  • The ideal applicant will have an art/design qualification or demonstrable equivalent
  • Proven experience in scientific illustration, graphic design, or art editing, preferably in a scientific or academic publishing environment
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop)
  • Strong attention to detail with a creative eye and the ability to maintain consistency across multiple projects
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with authors, editors, and other stakeholders
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure and meet tight deadlines
  • Knowledge of scientific principles and terminology is highly desirable

US Annualized Base Salary Range: $75,000- $85,000. The salary offer may vary based on work experience, education, skill level and equity. The US salary range does not align with the salary ranges in other countries when converted to the currency of that country.
