About the role:

The position of Director, Legal – E&A is to be based at the Europe & Africa head office in Uxbridge. The person filling this position will join a team of eleven counsel, seven of which are based in Uxbridge, and will report to the VP, Legal – EMEA. There will be a principal focus on commercial initiatives, regulatory and litigation which have competition law as a key feature of the matter. The person will also handle a very broad workload related to legal issues, including contractual, commercial, disputes, regulatory, employment, member compliance, IP, real estate and compliance matters.

HOW YOU WOULD CONTRIBUTE:

The position will provide day to day legal support and advice on a broad range of legal affairs throughout the E&A region which is comprised of over 35 markets. The role will have a principal focus on Channel Distribution initiatives throughout E&A (particularly looking through the lens of competition and multi-jurisdictional contract law) – this may be non-contentious or contentious (regulatory and/or litigious) – and to support E&A Management. In addition, day to day markets support will be to Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Luxembourg and Ukraine but these do and will change from time to time. Responsibilities will include, without limitation, taking personal responsibility for a wide range of legal requirements of E&A countries as follows:

  • Responsible for providing legal advice and support to specific countries on all their legal requirements;
  • Channel Distribution initiatives and related matters;
  • Supporting litigious/contentious matters, including compliance and investigations. This includes class actions;
  • Support on matters impacting the regional distributor-led committee (EASG);
  • Overseeing corporate governance in the EMEA region and managing a corporate governance specialist based in Luxembourg (including legal matters within the Lux corporate office);
  • Responsible for providing legal advice and support to the business on specific EMEA wide multi-jurisdictional legal issues and also corporate led projects/matters;
  • Providing the business with advice on commercial risks, providing appropriate solutions/ alternatives and facilitating sound commercial risk management;
  • Interpreting and analyzing external counsel advice, assessing reliability, questioning where needed, placing it within the relevant commercial context and providing comprehensible business focused advice and leadership;
  • Instructing and actively managing external counsel in line with agreed scope and budget;
  • Providing training to the business stakeholders on key legal issues.

SKILLS AND BACKGROUND REQUIRED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:

  • Expertise in competition law, particularly around vertical arrangements and investigations
  • Uses analytical skills to evaluate external counsel advice, seeking clarification where needed, able to challenge and lead where needed;
  • Able to effectively take legal advice and apply to relevant commercial circumstances, offering guidance and judgment to business stakeholders in a comprehensible and business-friendly manner;
  • Ability to be proactive and work autonomously and initiative to solve problems in a practical and commercial manner;
  • Relationship focused and a strong communicator with sensitivity to cultural diversity;
  • Ability to deal with multiple stakeholders (at all levels, and both internal and external) and prepared to cover multiple disciplines and subject areas and capable of prioritizing and managing a busy and varied workload;
  • Strong customer and results orientation;
  • Capability to work in a listed, multinational framework and provide appropriate reporting and transparency;
  • Strong team ethic and collaborative in nature and ability to function as an effective team member.

Education

  • Qualified solicitor or Member of the bar, with a degree from a recognized university;
  • Ideally, a minimum of 10-12 + years post qualification experience gained in a recognised law firm and/or fast-paced in-house legal department although all candidates with demonstrable ability to fulfill the role will be considered
  • Considerable exposure and experience in competition law. Ideally some experience within a law firm in this area, but strong in-house experience in consumer sector and/or distribution arrangements will also be strongly considered
  • Experience with multiple jurisdictions is strongly desired.
