Job Description

Salary: £78,187.65 (gross) per annum inclusive of London Weighting, with a fixed sum allowance of £2,668

Location: Head Office – London

Duration: Permanent

The Labour Party is looking to recruit a General Counsel. The post-holder will be responsible for managing the provision of legal advice and support to the Labour Party, working regularly with, and reporting to, the Executive Director, Governance and Legal. They will also be responsible for managing the Labour Party’s compliance with its regulatory responsibilities, with particular responsibility for the requirements of party finance, data protection and electoral law.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Good knowledge of the Labour Party’s rules, constitutional structures and links with Government, the Parliamentary Labour Party and affiliated organisations
  • Private practice or in-house experience, with a demonstrable ability to be an effective in-house lawyer in a fast-paced and high-profile environment
  • Excellent working knowledge of the key legislation that affects the work of the Labour Party, including but not limited to the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, the Representation of the People Act 1983, Data Protection Act 2018, Equality Act 2010 and all relevant local government legislation.
  • Ability to provide high quality legal advice relevant to the core areas of work and ability to continually support the Executive Director, Governance and Legal in ensuring the Labour Party’s compliance with legal, statutory and regulatory requirements
