Description

Experimental Engineer – Test Capability and Strategy Engineer – Submarines

Full Time

Why Rolls-Royce?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Experimental Engineer – Test Capability and Strategy Engineer to join Rolls-Royce Submarines.

We’re a leader in propulsion system design and development for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine fleet and the sole provider and technical authority.

Join us and we’ll provide an environment where you can be yourself. An inclusive, digital-first culture that invests in you, gives you a platform for continuous learning, and access to an incredible breadth and depth of opportunities to grow your career.

A number of exciting opportunities have arisen in the Rolls-Royce Submarine’s Technical Development Department, where a new team has been formed and deliver a large body of experimental testing that the business is planning to do now and in the future. This is a great opportunity to get involved in setting the vision for how we do experimental testing going forward.

The new Experimental Engineering team is responsible for pioneering a new Experimental Verification and Validation capability within the business. Including the entire value chain needed to deliver quality test data. This includes deciding where a test will be conducted, developing appropriate test programmes with technical customers, defining and developing new testing technology and capability, managing the delivery of the enabling work for a test programme (i.e. new rig development, existing rig changes, test procedure development etc.), deployment of globally cutting edge measurement technologies, over-seeing the collection of raw test data, and the processing of raw test data to produce quality data for technical customers.

The team is looking for a proactive individual for the test capability and strategy area to ensure the test capability and test facilities across the business are managed in a way to ensure they can service the business’ test data needs today and in the future.

We offer excellent development, a competitive salary and exceptional benefits. These include bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts.

Your needs are as unique as you are. Hybrid working is a way in which our people can balance their time between the office, home or another remote location. It’s a locally managed and flexed informal discretionary arrangement. As a minimum we’re all expected to attend the workplace for collaboration and other specific reasons, on average three days per week.

What you will be doing:

As a test capability and strategy engineer your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Developing, implementing, and managing long term roadmaps for specific technology areas (including thermal hydraulic, high-fidelity measurement, acoustic, component, shock, EC&I, physics, materials and secondary propulsion testing) and for both new and existing test facilities, including their delivery.
  • Integrating with key capability areas across the business to ensure the testing roadmaps provide the necessary test capability today and, in the future, to service the business testing needs. Including test, measurement, and data capabilities.
  • Act as the point of contact for incoming test requests from across the business, undertaking the initial key stakeholder engagement and requirements and ensuring it is integrated into the right area of Technical Development.
  • Generate the initial principal testing solution. Including capturing key testing requirements, owning the first stage of the test data acquisition tube map, shaping the key testing requirements, and leading the development and endorsement of the main testing options.

There may also be opportunities to:

  • Engage with Discipline Development Leads, as well as rig operators and technicians in our on-site engineering laboratory to deliver a suite of experimental testing programmes as required.
  • Engage with external organisations and in research projects at our University Technology Centres, particularly in relation to fluid dynamics, heat transfer, and novel experimental measurement techniques in the near-term, and potentially in other areas in the future.

Who we’re looking for:

At Rolls-Royce we embrace agility, are bold, pursue collaboration and seek simplicity in everything we do. These principles form our values and behaviours and are an essential component of our assessment process and are fundamental qualities that we seek for all roles.

To be successful in this role you will need to meet the following essential criteria:

  • Degree or equivalent in a relevant engineering or science-based subject.
  • Understanding of the Submarine Enterprise and the role of test programmes within the V&V of our products.
  • Experience of strategy and capability development and implementation.
  • Experience of conducting experimental testing to support technical development or V&V, relevant to engineering.
  • Understanding measurement techniques, methods and accuracies.
  • Good interpersonal, time management and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to work to Rolls-Royce company processes in order to ensure quality of output; and to Health, Safety and Environmental rules and legislation.

We’re an equal opportunities employer. We’re committed to developing a diverse workforce and an inclusive working environment. We believe that people from different backgrounds and cultures give us different perspectives. And the more perspectives we have, the more successful we’ll be. By building a culture of respect and appreciation, we give everyone who works here the opportunity to realise their full potential.

To work for Rolls-Royce Submarines you need to hold a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if you don’t currently already have this in place. Due to the nature of work the business conducts and the protection of certain assets, you must hold a UK nationality. Any dual nationals will require additional scrutiny and background checks prior to commencing work with RRSL.
