About The Role
About this opportunity
Gleeds has an exciting opportunity for a Trainee Building Surveyor to join our Edinburgh or Glasgow offices.
We cover the full range of Building Surveying services and have a particular focus on project and programme delivery. We are currently involved in a diverse range of exciting projects and have a robust pipeline of future commissions and work across a range of sectors – heritage, education, healthcare, commercial, central government, defence and retail.
You will be part of a vibrant dynamic team responsible for delivering a varied range of building surveying commissions including professional services, condition surveys – one off and portfolio programmes and construction projects. We cover all aspects of construction from feasibility through to design, construction, handover and post completion reviews with an emphasis on heritage, refurbishment, adaptation, planned maintenance and a developing track record in decarbonisation and net zero programmes.
We have a structured training programme to support RICS accreditation with excellent APC rate and encourage a broad mix of CPD through a range of targeted and bespoke training programmes.
We deploy a range of technologies to support project delivery and there are various opportunities to expand and develop your skill base.
As a Trainee you will:
- Assist Building Surveyors in the delivery of building surveying services, including surveys, dilapidation advice, party wall advice, and construction projects for new builds, renovations and maintenance works – from feasibility through to design, contract administration to handover and post completion reviews.
- Assist Building Surveyors with the preparation of:
- Feasibility studies
- Prepare cost plans
- Designs and detailed specifications
- Submissions for planning and building regulation approvals
- Tender documentation and managing the tender process, including designing tender marking schemes
- Assist Building Surveyors with:
- Administration of construction contracts
- Evaluating and reporting on tenders
- Undertaking surveys including condition surveys, DDA, Fire Risk Assessments, Schedules of Condition and Acquisition Surveys.
- Preparing reports for customers
- Undertaking party wall surveyor duties
- Providing dilapidations advice and delivering dilapidations assessments and negotiating with other parties
- Undertaking quality monitoring roles of major construction projects
- Ensuring that all quantitative and financial information has been independently checked before issue, including maintaining evidence of independent checks

- Building surveying practices and procedures
- Contract administration procedures
- Compliance audits and surveys
- Managing contractor activities pre and post-construction
- Tendering
- Party wall matters
- Dilapidations
- Design procedures and controls
- Construction quality and monitoring
- Clear and effective communication skills – both oral and written
- Good organisational skills and the ability to quickly adapt to changes
- Sound problem solving, negotiating skills, financial and numeracy management skills
- Sound ICT Skills, with a high level of proficiency in MS Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint
- Ability to work as part of a team
