Job Title: Mass Properties Specialist

What You’ll Be Doing:

  1. Collate mass property data for equipment and systems to deliver weight and centroid control on multi-billion pound submarine programmes.
  2. Support the Mass Properties Lead to aggregate weight and centroid reports and present the status to the Chief Naval Architect.
  3. Collaborate with system design engineers to accurately estimate mass, centroid, and design maturity of multiple mechanical and electronic systems.
  4. Maintain a comprehensive database of parts mass properties.
  5. Provide input to and lead weight saving strategies and maintain the list of weight risk and opportunities for each discipline area.
  6. Interrogate CAD models to determine estimates for mass properties with associated uncertainties.
  7. Utilise statistical analysis to provide a whole boat picture of weight risk and opportunity to senior leaders, stakeholders, and our customers.

Your Skills and Experiences:

Essential:

  1. Qualified in a STEM subject or extensive experience.
  2. CEng/IEng status or a clear pathway to achieving professional recognition.
  3. Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  4. IT literate in Microsoft packages, experienced knowledge in Excel.

Desirable:

  1. Experience working with large, complex electrical or mechanical systems.
  2. Data analysis experience including interpretation, visualisation, manipulation, and presentation.
  3. Experience of using CAD packages and programmes.

The Weight Engineering Team is a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and data scientists who estimate, collate, and present mass properties data for several multi-billion pound submarine programmes. The Weight Engineering team plays a critical role in the whole boat design and assuring whole boat safety.
