About this opportunity
Cumberland Council is looking for a dynamic and proactive Senior Finance Manager – Corporate Finance, to lead the Accountancy and Financial Planning teams. Reporting directly to the Chief Finance Officer (Section 151 Officer), you will be a key member of the Senior Management and Finance Management teams, responsible for driving the achievement of service objectives and enhancing performance within the Finance Service Area.
This role involves managing and coordinating resources across the Accountancy and Financial Planning teams, ensuring efficient operations within a strong financial control framework that meets operational and client needs. You will also lead the Council’s Corporate Finance function and act as Deputy Section 151 Officer.
Key responsibilities include assisting the Chief Finance Officer with financial activities, providing financial advice to Councillors and Officers, and managing relationships with external auditors. You will champion efficient financial resource management, promoting high performance and value for money services while guiding Members and Officers on financial strategies, policies, and practices for informed decision-making.
The role operates on a hybrid work model, offering flexibility to work both remotely and from office locations in Carlisle, Workington, or Whitehaven.
This position is available on a permanent basis.

The ideal candidate will have a full CCAB accounting qualification and a strong understanding of local authority and public sector strategies. They will bring proven senior level management experience, particularly in leading professional finance teams.
Experience in contributing to national level strategy change, building effective working alliances, and managing multi-disciplinary teams to improve service delivery is essential; together with evidence of negotiating and managing large value, complex financial contracts.
