Competitive Salary
The Law Society of Scotland is seeking an exceptional leader to serve as its next Chief Executive Officer. This is a rare and prestigious opportunity to lead a highly respected professional body that plays a pivotal role in the Scottish legal sector.
As the voice of nearly 13,750 solicitors, the Law Society of Scotland is dedicated to supporting its members, upholding professional standards, and acting in the public interest. Established by statute in 1949, the Society performs the dual roles of professional membership body and co-regulator of the Scottish legal profession. The incoming Chief Executive will be responsible for ensuring the continued excellence of these functions, while navigating a changing legal landscape and advocating for the profession at the highest levels.
Working closely with the President, Council, Board, Office Bearers, and a highly experienced Senior Leadership Team, the CEO will be responsible for developing and delivering the Society’s strategy. This will involve overseeing all aspects of the organisation’s operations, governance, and external relations, ensuring financial sustainability, and driving innovation to support members in a rapidly evolving profession. The CEO will also act as a key representative of the Society, engaging with government, the judiciary, and external legal bodies.
The ideal candidate will be a strategic and dynamic leader with a proven track record in a high-profile, complex stakeholder environment. Whether from the public, private, or not-for-profit sector, they will bring experience of leading multi-year strategies, managing financial and operational functions, and working effectively with governance bodies. Exceptional relationship management skills, high emotional intelligence, and the ability to inspire and manage change are essential. While direct experience of the legal sector is desirable, a strong appreciation of governance, regulatory frameworks, and public affairs is required.
This role requires a leader with integrity, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. The CEO will need to balance the interests of the profession with those of the public, while maintaining the Society’s reputation for independence, transparency, and effectiveness.
This is a Scotland-based role, with national and some international travel required. The position offers a competitive salary and benefits package, along with the opportunity to influence the future of Scotland’s legal profession.
