As a Technical & Quality Support Engineer at Advanced Metallurgical Services Ltd (AMS), you will play a critical role in ensuring that testing and calibration operations adhere to ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards. You will provide technical expertise, troubleshoot issues related to testing and calibration, and maintain the highest quality standards throughout our processes. The ideal candidate will possess both a technical background in engineering, metallurgy, calibration, machinery or maintenance and a strong focus on quality control and management systems.

This role supports both internal and external key stakeholders by ensuring the accuracy and reliability of test results and calibration processes, managing technical documentation, and participating in audits and continuous improvement initiatives.

Actively work with relevant team members to develop and expand the business portfolio., * Provide hands-on technical support for testing and calibration activities, ensuring compliance with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements.

  • Investigate and resolve technical issues related to laboratory testing, calibration, and equipment performance.

  • Support the calibration and maintenance of laboratory instruments, ensuring traceability to national and international standards.

  1. Quality Assurance:
  • Ensure adherence to the laboratory’s quality management system (QMS) as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards for both testing and calibration.

  • Conduct internal audits of laboratory processes to verify compliance with ISO standards and identify opportunities for improvement.

  • Assist in the preparation and review of calibration and test reports, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

  • Support the management of non-conformances, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).

  • Participate in external audits and support the laboratory’s accreditation activities with UKAS or other relevant bodies.

  1. Process Improvement & Validation:
  • Collaborate with the Quality Manager and technical teams to continuously improve testing and calibration processes.

  • Assist in validation and verification activities to ensure accurate and reliable testing and calibration results.

  • Contribute to the implementation of new technologies and methodologies in the laboratory to enhance efficiency and quality.

  1. Documentation & Record Keeping:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records for all testing, calibration, and equipment performance as per ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements.

  • Ensure that all technical procedures and work instructions are documented, controlled, and regularly reviewed.

  • Ensure traceability of test and calibration results by maintaining proper documentation and sample identification practices.

  1. Customer Support & Communication:
  • Where relevant provide technical advice and support to customers regarding test results, calibration procedures, and compliance to industry standards.

  • Where relevant communicate technical issues and corrective actions with customers, ensuring a high level of client satisfaction.

  • Prepare technical reports and documentation for submission to customers, ensuring clarity and adherence to technical standards.

  1. Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE) Compliance:
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory health and safety policies, particularly when working with hazardous materials and chemicals.

  • Participate in risk assessments and promote a safety-conscious environment within the lab.

  • Ensure that calibration and test procedures comply with all relevant environmental and safety regulations.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Metallurgy, Material Science, or a related technical field.

  • Qualification or training in quality management systems (ISO/IEC 17025:2017) is preferred.

· Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in a testing or calibration laboratory, ideally within a UKAS-accredited environment.

  • Proven experience with ISO/IEC 17025:2017 standards, quality systems, and internal auditing.

  • Experience in equipment calibration and maintenance, with a focus on ensuring traceability to national standards.

· Technical Skills:

  • Strong understanding of laboratory instrumentation, calibration procedures, and testing methodologies.

  • Familiarity with relevant standards (e.g., ASTM, BS EN ISO, ASME).

  • Proficient in the use of laboratory software, including LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System).

· Soft Skills:

  • Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, lots of resilience.

  • Strong attention to detail and a focus on precision.

  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly to customers and internal teams.

  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.

  • Working to tight deadlines, challenging and complexed circumstances.

Key Competencies:

  • Knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025:2017 requirements (desirable).

  • Technical expertise in material testing and calibration processes (desirable).

  • Strong understanding of traceability and quality management systems (QMS).

  • Ability to conduct technical investigations and root cause analysis.

  • Experience with the validation and verification of test and calibration methods.

  • Proficiency in technical report writing and document management.

  • Willing to work towards business development and expansion plans.

  • Primarily office based with occasional hybrid working.

  • Occasional travel may be required from time to time for business needs.
