Position: Head of SHEQ

Location: Peterborough with hybrid working available

Salary Guide: £100-110k (Neg DOE), Car/Allowance, Bonus and excellent benefits package

Our Client: Is an integrated design and build solution provider operating in the water sector. They have over 1,000 staff working across eight regional centres, primarily supporting eight long term water sector frameworks operating both on their own and increasingly in joint ventures and alliances.

Our client is part of Anglian Water\’s @one Alliance. The Alliance is set to deliver a record £2.6 billion of the water company\’s overall investment in AMP8, with much of this work specifically targeted at protecting and enhancing the East of England\’s natural environment and providing resilience to climate change. This investment portfolio forms part of Anglian Water\’s wider, record £9 billion proposed plans for AMP8, which will see a huge programme of much-needed investment between 2025 and 2030.

The Role: To help achieve this, our client is looking for a Head of SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) to lead and shape their SHE strategy, drive industry-leading safety practices, and foster a culture where everyone goes home safe, every day. This is a pivotal role, reporting to the SHEQ Director.

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead SHE Strategy & Innovation – Take ownership of the SHEQ strategy and implementation plan, driving continuous improvement and cutting-edge solutions.
  2. Make a Real Impact – Influence key decisions, embed SHE practices, and enhance safety performance across one of the most progressive water sector capital delivery alliances.
  3. Lead & Inspire a High-Performing Team – Develop, mentor, and empower a team of SHE professionals dedicated to excellence.
  4. Drive Sustainable Solutions – Play a crucial role in integrating environmental responsibility into everything, from project planning to execution.
  5. Collaborate with Industry Leaders – Work closely with Anglian Water, alliance partners, regulators, and external stakeholders to set new benchmarks for SHE excellence.
  6. Develop & implement the SHE strategy, ensuring consistent application across all delivery teams.
  7. Lead & inspire a team of SHE Managers and Advisors, driving a positive and proactive safety culture.
  8. Engage with key stakeholders, including Anglian Water, partners, contractors, and regulatory bodies, to align SHE practices with industry standards and best practices.
  9. Analyse SHE performance data, identify trends, and implement improvement initiatives to enhance safety outcomes.
  10. Provide expert technical leadership, ensuring compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  11. Champion innovation & continuous improvement, introducing new technologies and approaches to SHE management.
  12. Ensure supplier & contractor SHE compliance, working closely with procurement teams to uphold the highest safety standards.

Experience:

  1. SHE Expert – Degree/Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, plus relevant experience in construction, utilities, or infrastructure.
  2. Leadership & Influence – Proven ability to lead teams, drive cultural change, and influence stakeholders at all levels.
  3. Strategic Thinker – Ability to develop and implement long-term SHE plans aligned with business objectives.
  4. Data-Driven Decision Maker – Strong analytical skills to interpret SHE data and drive improvements.
  5. Regulatory Knowledge – In-depth understanding of SHE legislation, industry standards, and best practices.
  6. Strong Communicator – Ability to present, influence, and engage with teams across the business.
