About Us:

Charlton Athletic Football Club is an English professional association football club based in Charlton, south-east London. The club was founded on June 9th, 1905 and has a storied history, including winning the FA Cup in 1947 and returning to their Valley home in 1992. The women’s team was formed in 1991 and became a full-time professional team in 2021.

Currently, our men’s first team competes in League One, and our women’s team competes in the Women’s Championship. At Charlton, we are ‘one club’ and can be truly described as a ‘family club’.

Role Description:

To lead our talent identification and acquisition strategy, playing a key role in building a squad capable of achieving the club’s on-field objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Establish a comprehensive recruitment strategy aligned with the Club’s overall vision, strategic plan, and budgetary objectives.
  • Develop, maintain, and evidence a positional succession plan, in alignment with the football department’s playing philosophy, to identify key areas for improvement within the First Team/U21 squads.
  • Lead the scouting structure and workflow with regular meetings, ensuring effective coverage of domestic and international markets and identification of cost-effective, value-driven acquisitions.
  • Engage and collaborate fully with the Data & Recruitment Analysis teams to integrate data-driven insights into the recruitment process.
  • Liaise closely with the Manager, Academy Manager, Head of Emerging Talent, and Head of Academy Recruitment to build awareness of ongoing recruitment criteria.
  • Start/lead negotiations with players and their representatives regarding transfers and contracts.
  • Provide regular updates in formalised meetings to the Manager and MD on overall recruitment progress, market trends, and potential targets.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with players, agents, other clubs, and key stakeholders within the football industry.

Education/Qualifications/Training:

  • FA – Leadership of Talent ID & Development (desirable)

Abilities/Skills/Knowledge:

  • 5 years proven experience within a similar role in Band 6 or above.
  • Wide network of contacts.
  • Extensive knowledge of modern football landscape, including player markets, Talent ID methods, and Data & Analysis toolsets.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • An ability to take brave decisions after a comprehensive process.
  • A willingness to take ownership and be held accountable.
  • Emotionally intelligent influencer.
  • Ability to work to tight deadlines and be flexible within the schedule.
  • IT literate.
  • Proven track record in Band 2 or above.
  • Ability to use SaaS platforms where necessary to evaluate players.
