Position Summary
Why join our team?
Our team is responsible for the product management in Europe of a suite of owned and operated global products developed by Samsung for use on our range of TVs, smartphones and tablets. We work very closely with our business development and ads colleagues, and the three teams together comprise ESBO, the European Services Business Office.
Our main products include Gaming Hub, the innovative cloud gaming native to Samsung Smart TVs, TV Plus that offers a wide variety of TV channels and video on demand, and Samsung News, a mobile-first news aggregation app pre-installed on all new Samsung devices.
The ambitions for Samsung News are bold and exciting; the product is already in market in North America, and with collaboration from our teams around the world, we will launch Samsung News UK in 2025!
We are seeking Associate Editors, with a strong journalism background, to join our global news team. Based in London, you will deliver a world-class curation service for UK users making decisions minute-by-minute to verify developing news stories, issue breaking news alerts, compile deep-dives and create impactful morning and evening briefings. Your work will inform millions of users, and drive impact for one of the largest brands in the world.
Role and Responsibilities
Your key responsibilities
-
Pitch daily content ideas, monitor trending news and work to editorial guidelines and standards as set by the Editor-in-Chief.
-
Curation of the Samsung News aggregation app (and related platforms) including issuing breaking news alerts, compiling briefings and researching deep-dives on topical issues.
-
Utilise real time data to extract insights and guide editorial decision-making and content placement.
-
Identify issues relating to impartiality, undue partisanship and fake news, and filter out any content that breaches our editorial standards.
-
Understand, and be the guardian of, the editorial tone of voice for Samsung News by following editorial guidelines.
-
Display a willingness for the ‘One Samsung’ approach, with the ability to upskill and make valid editorial contributions to both our UK and US news apps.
-
Develop positive working relationships with content partners and other teams within Samsung, including giving/receiving feedback.
-
Shift work is required in this role, as is a willingness to respond to unprecedented breaking news events. Regular working pattern could include some early mornings, evenings and weekends.
What we need for this role
To be successful, you will possess the following skills and attributes:
-
Experience working as a journalist in UK newsrooms, with hands-on news desk experience.
-
A deep understanding of UK content and editorial; what makes content engaging and popular in different consumption scenarios, and the ability to demonstrate sound editorial judgement.
-
Up-to-date legal and compliance knowledge of UK, and ideally US, news media landscape.
-
Maintain standards of accuracy and attention to detail when working to tight deadlines.
-
An analytical and problem-solving mind-set, with the ability to derive clear and logical new insights through performance data.
-
Experience of operating autonomously across multiple teams, working in a matrix environment with a high degree of ambiguity.
-
Strong communication and interpersonal skills, a positive attitude towards challenging tasks, and a good sense of humour.
-
A genuine passion for news and current affairs, with a desire to help build the best product experience possible.
-
Able to work independently as well as cross-functionally to curate the Samsung News app.
What does success look like?
We want someone who is a positive and proactive teammate, who’d rather figure out a smarter way of doing something than keep doing it the same way. We’re a highly-functioning small team with a start-up mentality, knowing that we have the resources and potential of one of the most exciting tech companies that exist today. Success therefore would include:
-
A product that grows its presence in the US and launches into the UK with substantial growth in audience and engagement.
-
Maintenance of balanced, impactful and defendable journalism that continues to engage and entertain our users.
-
A product set that is continually refined and improved upon, with strong brand recognition and high NPS scores.
-
Be a visible member of a team that is imaginative, high-performing and highly regarded.
The interview process
The first stage of the interview will be with the hiring manager and one other person, preferably in person at our offices in Central London. This will be a general interview where we ask about your skills, passions and previous experience.
Second stage interviews will be with the UK hiring manager and a senior team member from the UK or US, and may include a task to demonstrate your experience and knowledge.
A third round may be required if a clear front-runner has not yet been established.
