Salary: £40,000 – £50,000 depending on relevant skills, knowledge and experience. The expected salary range for this role reflects internal benchmarking and external market insights.

Welsh language skills are desirable but not necessary for this role.

Contract type: Permanent role – Full Time, in office role (will include shift work).

Location: BBC Bangor, Gwynedd, Wales (also to support 3 other smaller satellite offices in Northern Wales).

Role

Working within BBC Technology & Media Operations, the Bangor Technology Operations team provides technical support to everyone that operates within North Wales. We support offices and studios in Aberystwyth, Caernarfon, and Wrexham from our base in Bangor.

The Operations Engineer position will be part of the technology team which exists to provide excellent customer support and services to those based in North Wales. Working a shift rota, you will ensure an appropriate level of service, quality of output, stakeholder engagement, and Problem Support is provided to every team that uses our services.

Main Responsibilities

  • As an Operations Engineer within the team you will be, when on shift, the engineer on duty. Initiating response to service disruption and support proactive measures aimed at preventing recurrence.
  • You can use a diverse range of broadcast and production monitoring tools to identify and resolve complex service impacting issues across a range of technologies and platforms.
  • We would look for you to log accurately incidents including technical response and action taken. You’ll lead on implementing contingency procedures in response to planned or unexpected events.
  • As a team member, you will hand over any incident and information to your shift colleagues and keep informed of any operational changes that may affect our systems.
  • We would encourage you to be an active participant within the technology team and the BBC Bangor family to help support great content making and happiness in the workplace.

  • Broad technical knowledge, including understanding of complex systems.
  • Experience of working with systems and frameworks such as dira!, Jupiter, Final Cut Pro, Reaper and equipment by the likes of DHD, Grass Valley, Yamaha, Sony, and JVC. Monitoring and logging systems such as Nagios, Jira, and BMC Helix.
  • Strong understanding of audio recording and editing, video recording and editing, outside broadcasting, and communication systems.
  • Confident with IT equipment such as servers, laptops, computers, routers, and network structures.
  • Have a passion for troubleshooting, indulgence in system logs and the tenacity to fix and support our systems.
  • Excited to work in a naturally bilingual environment, that has a strong atmosphere of Welsh culture and society. While the ability to speak Welsh is not mandatory for this role it would be desirable. We would support any candidate if they have the desire to learn Welsh.
