ERM is seeking to hire a Principal Consultant with experience in industrial decarbonisation to join our Sustainable Energy Solutions (SES) team.
The role will include close working across SES’s Hydrogen & Fuel Cells, Low Carbon Industry and Low Carbon Fuels & Chemicals sub-teams, covering topics from primary resources to chemical and energy products. SES has over 150 experts in sustainable energy, working on topics such as low carbon buildings, transport, hydrogen, fuels, chemicals, energy networks, smart systems, energy policy, sustainability assessment and innovation services.

The role
Principal Consultants help to win and then lead the delivery of innovative, high impact projects. We cover all elements of industrial decarbonisation, working across different technologies (hydrogen, CCUS, electrification), client types (project developers, governments, industrial clusters) and project types (business strategy, policy, roadmaps, markets and technoeconomics).
Principal Consultants carry out and oversee research and quantitative analysis in these areas, providing clients with thought leadership, insight and strategic advice. You are also expected to contribute significantly to winning work and business development activities, including identifying opportunities, preparing proposals and business networking.
Multiple career tracks are open to ERM staff to pursue technical specialisms, progress to Partnership and relocate to one of ERM’s many global locations.
Key responsibilities of this role include:
- Driving business development activities including identifying opportunities and leading proposal development in collaboration with ERM’s Partners.
- Managing delivery of consultancy projects and ensuring high quality outputs to clients on time and within budget.
- Overseeing the work of other consultants, including setting tasks, supporting research and analysis, coaching junior staff and reviewing and quality assuring outputs.
- Acting as the primary point of contact for clients and developing excellent client relationships.
- Contributing to thought leadership in the industrial decarbonisation space and helping to build strong networks with industrial clients.
- Contributing to the development and implementation of consulting market strategies, including thought leadership for the industrial decarbonisation team.
- Line management is likely to form part of your duties, though not necessarily from day one.
- There will be opportunities to develop and apply strategy, project management, business development and team leadership skills.
We are seeking candidates with the following attributes:
- A degree in a relevant subject, ideally at Master’s level or above.
- At least 8 years of relevant experience.
- Demonstrated ability to deliver high-quality management consultancy work and commitment to client satisfaction. You should enjoy problem solving in a complex environment. You must also have enthusiasm, initiative, and a manifest interest in energy and sustainability.
- Knowledge of the market and key government decisions on industrial decarbonisation.
- Expertise on several industrial decarbonisation pathways (i.e. electrification and / or CCUS) is advantageous.
- Proven commitment to sustainability.
- Structured approach to and appetite for problem-solving.
- Commercial acumen combined with technical ability.
- Ability to motivate and lead teams and potentially line manage individuals; experience in line management of less experienced staff is advantageous.
- Drive, initiative and ability to work independently.
- Clear written and spoken communication for a range of audiences including the ability to summarise complex information succinctly.
- Fluent English, other languages welcome.
