Job Description:

  • To lead the strategic business development efforts for the Defence and Government BU, driving growth, client engagement, and profitability. The Business Development Director will be responsible for identifying and capitalizing on market opportunities, framework strategy, JV and partnership formation, building strong client relationships, and steering the organization’s business pipeline and operational capability to achieve long-term sustainable growth and profitability.
  • Strategic Development & Leadership:
  • Key member of overall leadership team, with a wide remit of responsibility.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive business development strategy to support the growth of the construction business, focused on maximum interaction with clients and opportunities.
  • Identify emerging market trends, new business opportunities, and strategic partnerships to position the company as an industry leader.
  • Monitor competitor activities and market dynamics to adapt and refine strategies effectively.
  • Collaborate with leadership to set short and long-term business targets, ensuring they are measurable and achievable.
  • Development of the wider Sub-Division and STRABAG UK public sector framework strategy on behalf of all Business Units.
  • Specific Duties:
    • Strategic support to acquisition businesses and their RM 6356 framework bid.
    • Development of mid-tier private sector Defence opportunities.
    • Leadership of CCS (RM6320, 6232, 6378) strategy and bidding.
    • Development and leadership of x2 specific large project JV opportunities in the Defence Sector.
  • Client and Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with key clients, project managers, consultants, and industry stakeholders to generate repeat business and coordinate the efforts of others within the business.
    • Act as the primary liaison for major accounts, resolving issues and maintaining trust with stakeholders, and an escalatory point for other accounts.
  • Pipeline Management and Opportunity Conversion:
    • Oversee the business opportunity pipeline, evaluating and prioritizing prospects that align with company capabilities and growth objectives.
    • Facilitate effective bid/no-bid decisions, providing a thorough analysis of risks, competition, and the company’s capacity to deliver.
    • Support pre-construction and bid teams with intelligence and insights to enhance the quality and competitiveness of proposals.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting:
    • Maintain an opportunity and client (CRM) system, ensuring accurate tracking of client interactions, pipeline progress, and key metrics.
    • Prepare concise but regular reports and insights for the leadership team, highlighting trends, competitive analysis, and potential growth areas.
    • Evaluate client feedback to continuously improve business strategies, client offerings, and overall performance.
  • Operations:
    • Monitor, understand and manage key client perceptions and issues during the delivery of live projects, to ensure customer satisfaction, operational adaptation, and repeat business.
    • Support operational delivery as required during transition.
  • Additional Responsibilities:
    • Represent the company at industry events, conferences, and networking opportunities to promote its brand and capabilities.
    • Develop and manage corporate hospitality plans to foster client relationships.

    Qualifications:

    • Experience in Defence and Government works or an equivalent regulated sector.
    • Able to achieve and maintain suitable NSV clearance, a minimum of Security Check.
    • UK National, resident in the UK for the last 5 years, with no dual nationality.
    • Proven experience in business development within Defence infrastructure or a related industry.
    • Strategic thinker with a strong commercial acumen and the ability to identify and seize opportunities.
    • Strong understanding of construction processes, market dynamics, and client needs.
    • Ideally holding experience in a UK Tier 1 construction business, as well as with internal and external JVs.
    • Record of achieving growth and establishing long-term client relationships.
    • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
