There will not be any such thing as a typical day as an apprentice as it will vary depending on what year you’re in, and what team you’re working with. To give you a bit of an idea once you are on site, you could be doing training and maintenance on mechanical, electrical or control and instrumentation plant and apparatus, reading and interpreting technical drawings or carrying out diagnostic type activities. You’ll be part of a team that ensures our plant is fully operational and reliable to allow us to produce consistent clean, green energy for the National Grid system. You’ll also be learning to be responsible and accountable for plant, equipment and systems and learn to be able to solve problems safely, logically, quickly, and confidently.
You’ll then spend the next 3 years working at Selby Power Station and other Drax locations, learning from experienced technicians. By the end of the 4 years, you’ll achieve an NVQ level 3 in Mechanical, Electrical or Multi Disciplined Engineering and have an option to complete an Engineering based HNC. Further training and development are a key part of your career journey at Drax as well, and this comes in many forms such as on the job training, working at different sites, or further qualifications.
During your apprenticeship you may be expected to work within teams at sites across our business. This will give you a fantastic opportunity to explore all aspects of technology throughout our electrical generating power plants.
