Electrical Engineer – Motors – Submarines
Full Time, On-site.
Location: Derby, Raynesway.
An exciting opportunity has arisen to work as an Electrical Engineer specialising in Motor Design within Rolls-Royce Submarines. Working within the Technology department, you will support the capability to design and develop motors, particularly at the component, subsystem, and system level; to bring these designs to fruition and demonstrate conformance of the design to application requirements and standards.
Particular areas of focus will include the E-magnetic circuit, heat transfer and flow analysis, Electro-mechanical & thermomechanical coupling, and machine-inverter interaction.

What you’ll be doing:
- You will design and simulate induction electric motors (from a high-level sizing perspective through to detailed prediction of performance and efficiency) and help bring them to manufacture.
- Demonstrate a creative attitude, find new solutions, and investigate current and novel technologies and their application.
- Support commercial, procurement, and the supply chain with technical specifications and supplier liaison.
- Understand and further optimise our in-house motor designs and further develop our performance predicted models.
- Develop verification and validation tests to compare experimental and simulation results.
- Understand requirements capture processes.
Who we are looking for:
- Bachelor’s degree, Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering or regional equivalent qualification or equivalent technical capability based on practical knowledge and experience.
- Experience relevant to the power electronics discipline; e.g., Finite element modelling experience in electro-magnetic and mechanical tools.
- Experience engaging with suppliers and/or manufacturing from a design engineering perspective.
- Ability to write technical reports.
- Ability to work in an agile, cross-functional team.
- Ability to solve problems with simple solutions.
- Awareness of DFMEA, FTA, and other design analysis processes.
