Placement 1 – Surface Transport – 6 months: Understanding the operational business and the fundamentals of Project Management in a large organisation with many different stakeholders.
Placement 2 – Major Projects – 6 months: You’ll gain stakeholder management experience with some of the biggest transport contractors in the UK. You’ll support the Project Manager in contract management, package handovers, assessing risks and managing the budget.
Placement 3 – London Underground – 6 months: You’ll gain a holistic understanding of the station, from power and signalling, to engineering and staffing. You’ll support the teams in seeking continuous improvements to upgrade the networks.
Placement 4 – Technology and Data – 6 months: You’ll learn to consolidate and manage planning schedules, support the development of business cases for new projects so that the team can ensure they reach financial targets whilst gaining exposure to different types of engineering and technology projects.

You will be working towards a Level 4 apprenticeship qualification by completing a portfolio of work and a professional discussion. Whilst on the scheme, we’ll support your technical development through a wide range of on-the-job practical experiences and placements. Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. We\’ll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and networking.
You\’ll also receive one-to-one guidance throughout the programme from your:
- Placement manager: Responsible for your day-to-day management and support with your development
- Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility
- Buddy: Usually an apprentice or graduate who gives support to you and ensures that you feel welcomed in the organisation
- Development adviser: Supports your professional development through providing career coaching and career progression at TfL
