Role details:
Our client, a leading company in the defence and security sector, is currently seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to join their team in Brighton on a contract basis. This role involves being a part of a multi-disciplined team to produce concept and detailed designs that meet internal and external customer requirements within defined schedule and cost parameters.
Key Responsibilities:
- Produce design schemes and proposals in response to specifications, under the guidance of lead engineers and senior designers.
- Perform mechanical engineering calculations, stress analysis, and fluid dynamics (FEA and CFD).
- Develop innovative, well-engineered conceptual solutions and design proposals using SolidWorks.
- Guide and inspire less experienced engineers.
- Write technical reports and project documentation.
- Provide technical guidance and leadership to resolve problems throughout the product development life cycle.
- Calculate the first order strength and performance of design solutions.
- Select appropriate materials and material forming solutions suitable for the quantity of components.
- Check design drawings for completeness and accuracy and select proprietary parts/components.
- Support investigations, solutions, and write reports.
- Follow procedures to meet ISO-9001 and AS9100 requirements.
- Liaise with production engineering to ensure optimum production methods and materials are chosen.
Job Requirements:
- Experience in mechanical engineering with an understanding of systems engineering requirements.
- Proficiency in using SolidWorks and SolidWorks PDM.
- Experience in aerospace engineering, though multiple sector experience is also considered.
- Understanding of geometric tolerancing, stack-up analysis, BS8888, and limits/fits.
- Ability to perform mechanical detailing, with electrical knowledge an advantage.
- Technical report writing and familiarity with design office practices.
- Ability to resolve challenges ingeniously and work with minimal supervision.
- Ability to meet deadlines and prioritise workload appropriately.
- Understanding of aerospace manufacturing and assembly processes.
- Relevant engineering degree such as BEng, BSc, MSc, MEng in mechanical or aerospace engineering.
- Professional membership or working towards membership of IMechE or IET.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of electrical/electronic systems, including electrical cabling in extreme environments (aerospace) and electronics packaging.
- Experience in assemblies / GD&T / vibration damping / structures.
