My client is the only European provider of collection, dismantling, diagnostics and crushing/sorting capabilities to derive black mass. They also support research and partner with universities, trade organisations and government entities to develop safe, more efficient energy storage solutions.
The role reports to the Chief Sustainability Officer and will contribute and provide the necessary expertise to ensure the continued integrity, professionalism and effectiveness of a comprehensive QHSE function and assist the leadership team to develop and monitor the QHSE performance. The European QHSE Director shall advise on all Quality, Health and Safety and Environmental (QHSE) matters, issues and concerns to ensure company compliance with statutory requirements, company and contractual requirements and good industry practice. Liaise with customers and supply chain regarding QHSE matters, ensuring their expectations are met.
The QHSE compliance function covers all aspects of developing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving the Health and Safety, Environmental and Quality management on their European sites, including formulating and implementing policies and procedures while ensuring legal compliance on company sites. The legal compliance of the company sites includes but is not limited to; ensuring the integrity of regulatory applications, complying with all applicable regulations, applying and maintaining applicable permits, licenses and registration of BS EN ISO 9001 quality management standard, BS EN ISO 14001 environmental standard and BS EN ISO 45001:2018.
Role Responsibilities:
- Lead QHSE within the business growth with lithium batteries.
- Introduce global company standards for the Health, Safety, Environmental and Quality procedures/controls for lithium batteries.
- Ensure management systems are maintained by the compliance department in line with compliance obligations and accreditations, including legal compliance registers, non-conformances, customer complaints, risk and opportunities, management review meetings, completing surveillance and accreditation audits etc.
- Formulate policies and procedures, implementing health & safety, environmental or quality procedures and ensure they comply with the law.
- Manage the completion of all risk assessments applicable.
- Ensure frequent safety, environmental and quality inspections and checks including completed Safe and Unsafe Act discussions and site safety tours are completed by the compliance department.
- Liaise, promote and maintain good rapport with regulatory bodies such as Environment Agency, Health & Safety Executive, Local Water Authority and Local Fire Service, District Council, Department for Transport and accreditation bodies.
- Respond to any safety, environmental, quality complaints and concerns raised by employees, investigate their claims and implement corrective actions to remove the danger alongside departmental management.
- Ensure Duty of Care audits on sites & its contractors/suppliers are completed by the compliance department.
- Manage the implementation and produce the global standard for occupational health monitoring for the solutions business.
- Ensure environmental hygiene monitoring and occupational monitoring is arranged by the compliance department.
- Approve applicable suppliers and contractors prior to works being undertaken for sites.
- Provide guidance to other departments on ADR requirements, paperwork, packaging methods and guidance.
- Collaborate with senior HSE professionals to align HSE standards within the group.
- Manage the monitoring of all relevant sampling, testing and annual inspections that take place on the site and equipment.
- Provide customer on-site risk assessments and method statements for site engineers attending customer sites for lithium assessments and packing.
- Manage emergency procedures on sites alongside operations management, including fire alarm drills etc.
- Lead by example and promote a positive health and safety culture.
- Manage the completion of internal audits and aspects relating to compliance of the quality management system (ISO 9001), environmental management system (ISO 14001) and the health and safety management system (ISO 45001).
- Manage first aid resources (AED, first aid kits etc.) on site including first aiders and their training requirements.
- Ensure sites remain compliant within all aspects of legislation and in line with the company’s accreditations.
- Maintain and continuously improve effective management systems for the business and processes of the company by ensuring the systems and processes are compliant with the health and safety, quality, and environmental requirements of the business.
- Ensure the completion of environmental permit variations, working closely with the Environment Agency from submission through to approval of permit.
- Manage and internally approve the annual ABTO / ABE licence submission.
- Internally review and approve data submission to the Environment Agency for waste returns and hazardous waste returns.
- Submit annual report to the Environment Agency in compliance with sites environmental permit, e.g., Annual Energy Consumption.
- Manage the environmental plan with due regard to current and pending legislative requirements.
- Manage and monitor upcoming relevant changes to legislation that will impact the business.
- Ensure the QHSE function identifies, pursues and documents the effective closeout of required corrective and preventative actions resulting from environmental incidents and complaints, internal and external audits, and assessments, including those of shareholders and regulators.
- Manage the reporting of emissions, CHG and sustainability resources for site.
Knowledge and experience:
- Managerial QHSE experience of 5 years plus.
- Excellent English language speaking and writing skills.
- Adaptable and flexible approach.
- Ability to meet deadlines, whilst maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work with people at all levels of the organisation.
- Keen to continue to improve understanding and knowledge of plant operations/group strategies to contribute towards the organisation.
- Hardworking attitude and reliable.
Salary & Benefits Information:
- Competitive base salary to be discussed with candidates on an individual basis.
