The starting salary for this role will usually be at the bottom of the salary range and will be pro-rata if the working hours are less than full time.

The Role & Key Responsibilities

We are looking for an individual experienced in the recovery and processing of data from mobile devices who wants to develop their career and undertake complex extractions, repair and analysis duties.

The Sussex Digital Forensic Unit is responsible for the forensic recovery and analysis of data from computers and mobile phones seized during investigations. Successful candidates will join our Mobile Devices Analysis Team. You will be responsible for the analysis of data extracted from mobiles and similar devices, as well as providing advice, support and assistance to others.

The role is office-based and the Sussex Digital Forensics Unit is located at Haywards Heath Police Station. You will be required to work a fixed shift pattern which includes day (08:00 – 16:00) and late shifts (10:00 – 18:00) as well as some weekend working (08:00 – 16:00).

It is important to note that the initial appointment will be SPA 10 (£34,329 – £37,692) with a competency gateway to SPA11 (£39,813 – £43,920). This role attracts an unsocial hours allowance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Analysing, interpreting and validating data extracted from mobiles and similar devices.
  • Conducting advanced device repairs and data extraction techniques.
  • Reviewing media and grading illegal content.
  • Keeping up to date with developments in the field of Digital Forensics and be a subject matter expert on key aspects of this field of work.
  • Providing advice and guidance to others, based on your knowledge as a subject matter expert.

You will need to be familiar with legislation relevant to our area of business, which includes, but is not limited to, PACE, RIPA and the CPIA. You will need to be capable of being compliant with ISO 17025. Where necessary, you will be required to take the lead in certain areas of business, commensurate with your grade. e.g. you might be required to make decisions in lieu of a Team Leader.

Due to the strong probability of viewing a broad range of disturbing material, you will be expected to be psychologically screened and interviewed prior to, and whilst in, post.

Skills & Experience

  • IT literate with significant experience in a Digital Forensics environment.
  • Experienced in the use of forensic tools for computer analysis.
  • Experienced in the use of a case management system, such as LIMA.
  • A high degree of interpersonal and oral skills along with the ability to negotiate and influence at all levels especially when giving evidence at court.
  • A flexible approach and awareness of operational security.

Knowledge of, or experience with, ISO 17025 would be a distinct advantage.
