Experienced Mixed Vet at D S McGregor & Partners, Wick, Caithness

Our independent and employee-owned practice is looking for an experienced mixed vet to join our team.

We’re idyllically located on the north east coast of the Highlands and offer a genuine mixed service, working for the people of our community to provide the very best care we can to pets, horses, and farms.

A typical day starts with a cup of tea and a team meeting at 8:45am, and when not on call, you will normally be finished by 5:30pm. The shared out of hours rota is currently 1:5 with days off in lieu. For a more detailed look into life at our practice, you can watch The Highland Vet on Channel 5, who filmed with us for six seasons!

We’ve always been an independent business – and we ensured we will stay this way by becoming employee-owned in 2023. This gives anyone joining our practice a unique opportunity to be involved in the service we provide.

Although the role can be flexible and individual interests pursued, a vet with an enthusiasm for farm animal work would be particularly suitable. We are looking for an experienced RCVS registered vet as a senior member of our team who has been with the practice for 22 years is stepping down.

We have two branches based in the towns of Thurso and Wick, both of which are well equipped, including:

  • Farm animal: Rectal scanners, hydraulic foot tipping crate, EEJ for bull/tup testing, automated faecal egg analysers. We have vets who are trained to carry out PMs at the local SRUC facility.
  • Small animal: Digital x-ray, ultrasound, dental x-ray with table-side processor, in-house blood machines, range of ortho equipment including TPLO kit.

We do everything we can to look after our colleagues, including:

  • Five days per week, 8:45am-5:30pm Mon-Fri and one in five out of hours, with time off in lieu
  • Salary dependent on experience with a salary structure in place
  • Five days annual CPD budget
  • 29 days holiday entitlement
  • Access to the XLVets community
  • Private medical insurance
  • Generous employee discount for your own pets
  • We can provide a company vehicle and assist in finding accommodation

Our Community: Caithness is a vibrant rural area that offers many opportunities for those that want to get involved in the local community. There are numerous sporting clubs, fitness facilities, and outdoor activities available in the area alongside a local cinema and excellent cafes and restaurants. For the more relaxed among us, there are beautiful beaches to walk the dog on, the chance to see the northern lights, and a wide variety of wildlife.

To Apply: For an informal chat about the role or to talk about next steps, please contact Pete, one of our Wick directors, either via phone on 01955 602088 or via email at
