Responsible to: The Head of Home
Main function: To assist the Cook and Assistant Cook in the preparation of nutritional meals to meet the needs of the residents, within the Christian ethos of the Council for Social Witness.
DUTIES
- To assist the Cook/Assistant Cook with food preparation.
- To serve food.
- To take rubbish to bins.
- To clean and tidy work areas.
- To clean and tidy kitchen areas including shelves, drawers and cooker.
- To clean floors, tiles and appliances.
- To wash dishes.
- To assist with the preparation of snacks (e.g. tea, sandwiches, suppers).
- To prepare vegetables.
- To clean and tidy dining room, setting up tables for meals and trays where appropriate.
- To arrange for the laundry of cloths, napkins and tea towels.
- To maintain records as required.
- To carry out any other reasonable duty as required by the management of the Home, which is necessary for the support and well-being of the residents.
STAFF MUST USE THE EQUIPMENT PROVIDED IN THE CARRYING OUT OF THEIR DUTIES
In carrying out the duties of Kitchen Assistant, the person will require the following:
- To be in sympathy with the Christian ethos of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland.
- To have integrity, honesty and patience.
- To have an understanding of the needs of the elderly in a nursing/residential home situation.
- To have an even temperament.
- To have an ability to work as a member of the caring team.
- To have an ability to treat residents as individuals and tolerate their likes and dislikes.
- To respect the authority and direction of the senior members of Staff in the Home.

PERSONNEL SPECIFICATION
CRITERIA
Qualifications and Knowledge
- Essential: Evidence an understanding of and respect for the needs of older people; Awareness of health and safety practices within a working and residential environment.
- Desirable: NVQ2 in Food Preparation & Cooking (or equivalent qualification).
Relevant Experience
- Desirable: Experience of working with older people. Experience of working in a Kitchen environment.
Personal Attributes
- Essential: To have integrity, honesty, patience and an even temperament; To have the ability to work on own initiative; To have the ability to treat all matters confidentially; To have respect for the authority and direction of the management and supervision of the Home; To have the ability to work as a member of a caring team.
Physical Requirements
- Essential: Health – such as to allow for attendance reliability and work proficiency; Appearance – personal dress and presentation must meet Health & Hygiene standards.
