Job Description: Auditor [BRCGS]

Reports to: Field Team Manager

This role is ideal for a highly experienced and technically proficient auditor with a strong background in food safety and certification programmes. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to industry best practices, compliance, and continuous improvement, while also being adaptable to the evolving needs of the organisation.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential Qualifications & Experience

Education:

  • Degree or equivalent qualification in food science, food technology, or a related science discipline (including microbiology and chemistry).
  • Consideration may be given to candidates with extensive (10+ years) relevant industry experience in lieu of formal education.

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time, post-qualification experience in the food industry.
  • At least 2 years in a quality assurance, food safety, regulatory, or inspection/enforcement role.

Professional Certifications:

  • Management System Lead Assessor Course (e.g., IRCA) or BRC Third-Party Auditor course.
  • Recognized HACCP training course (minimum 2 days).
  • Training in food safety management, HACCP principles, and ISO22000 Prerequisite Programs (PRPs).

Audit Training:

  • Successfully completed at least 10 audits (minimum of 15 audit days) against GFSI-approved standards or ISO22000.
  • At least 5 of these audits must be against the BRC Global Standard for Food Safety.
  • Completed at least 12 FSMS audit days across four organizations in the last three years under the leadership of a qualified auditor.
  • Proficient in audit techniques based on ISO19011.

Certification Programme Experience:

  • Registered BRCGS Global Standard for Food Safety Auditor (signed off in at least 5 of the following categories: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 14, 15 & 16).
  • Experience with additional certification programs, including:
  • BRCGS Agents and Brokers
  • BRCGS Storage and Distribution
  • BRCGS Packaging
  • FSSC22000
  • IFS
  • McDonald’s SQMS
  • Non-GMO verification
  • Social Responsibility auditing

Additional Training & Certifications:

  • Train-the-Trainer certification.

IT Proficiency:

  • Competency in Microsoft Outlook, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Adobe Acrobat, and Visio.
  • Proficiency in using online platforms and databases for audit management.

Operations & Operational Management

  • Support accreditation processes (e.g., UKAS) and implement necessary process improvements and procedural updates.
  • Conduct audits for clients across various accredited and non-accredited standards, adapting to evolving business demands.
  • Prepare comprehensive audit reports and, where permitted, conduct contract reviews and make certification decisions, including suspensions or withdrawals, in compliance with relevant standards.
  • Perform internal audits and actively contribute to internal auditing processes to drive continuous improvements within the Quality Management System (QMS), ensuring timely reporting.
  • Deliver internal and external training sessions, ensuring content is professional and engaging.
  • Provide training to employees and subcontracted auditors, supporting the organization\’s technical proficiency and credibility.
  • Develop training materials as required.
  • Manage workload within budgetary constraints set by senior leadership.
  • Support the Client Services team in day-to-day operations, providing technical expertise and attending operations meetings as needed.

Additional Requirements

  • Flexibility to accommodate workload variations, including occasional evening and weekend work.
  • Frequent travel within the UK and mainland Europe, with occasional international assignments requiring overnight stays.
  • Strong organizational and self-motivation skills, with the ability to manage high-pressure situations effectively.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional development, ensuring knowledge remains current with evolving industry standards and business requirements.
