The School of Geographical and Earth Sciences seeks a dynamic and broadly trained individual to take leadership in learning, teaching and scholarship in Earth and environmental science study programs. This position is one of three positions associated with a cluster hire in Building a Habitable Planet. The preferred candidate will contribute to delivering an excellent student experience by teaching, organising and delivering laboratory exercises, assessments and administration processes associated with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences. Applicants should have prior experience and skills in topics relevant to first and second year BSc study programs in Earth and Environmental Sciences, including rock/mineral identification, maps, field-based teaching, and introductory methods of GIS for the geosciences. The post is learning, teaching, and teaching scholarship focused.
At Grade 8/, to make a substantial and positive contribution to the Subject/School’s programmes, scholarship and an excellent student experience through leading and contributing to teaching, assessment, and providing academic leadership and management associated with undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and engaging in rigorous enquiries into learning and teaching practices.
To actively engage in relationships with external stakeholders that advance knowledge exchange, public understanding and outreach.
Main Duties and Responsibilities

Deliver in-person a range of teaching, laboratory exercises, supervision, dissertation supervision and assessment activities across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes within the Earth Science and Physical Geography disciplines in the School of Geographical and Earth Sciences.

Carry out course administration within required timescales ensuring effective communication of information, in particular assessment requirements and criteria and timely and constructive feedback on assessment.

Contribute to the on-going development and design of the curriculum in a manner that supports a research-led and scholarly approach to student learning and assessment in the discipline and/or profession.

Make effective use of learning technologies to support and enhance course delivery, course organisation, feedback and assessment. This may involve blended and/or online provision.

Ensure an inclusive and evidence-based approach to facilitating learning in a range of face to face delivery formats such as tutorials/laboratory exercises, lectures, problem- based learning, that promotes student participation and learning outcome attainment.

Participate in local, and potentially overseas, activities associated with student recruitment [e.g. open days, summer school], orientation and induction and other School and University initiatives such as support for student transitions, employability and student mobility as appropriate.

Engage in continuing professional development activities as appropriate.

Develop effective working relationships with students and, in partnership with relevant student services teams, respond appropriately to the diverse range of learning approaches and learner needs.

Develop relationships with external stakeholders in support of knowledge exchange, public understanding and appropriate forms of outreach such as widening access.

A1 Relevant PhD or equivalent teaching experience in the geosciences.

Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in Earth, environment, and geographical sciences such as rock and mineral identification, field-based methods, GIS, and quantitative methods applied to the investigations of various geoscience topics. To be able to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.

A3 A growing reputation for scholarship within the subject areas of Earth and Environmental Sciences, and Physical Geography.
Desirable:
B1 Membership of relevant professional body, where appropriate.
B2 Programming experience in the Python (or equivalent) language applied to GIS teaching.
Skills
Essential:
C1 Sufficient breadth and/or depth of knowledge in geosciences of teaching methods and techniques to work within the subject area.
C2 Ability to communicate material of a specialist or highly technical nature and to be effective both orally and in writing at a level appropriate to the activity.
C3 Thorough knowledge and ability to apply policy, practice and procedures, including broader University/sector/external [e.g. commercial] awareness.
C4 Up-to-date knowledge and specialist understanding in Earth and Environmental Sciences with an ability to engage the interest and enthusiasm of students to inspire learning and to provide pastoral care to students within the subject area.
For appointment at Grade 8:
C5 Track record of scholarship and development and delivery of teaching, and proven ability to develop and devise teaching programmes, techniques and methods.
C6 Extensive breadth and depth of knowledge in Earth and environmental sciences to develop teaching programmes/methodologies/learning support.
C7 Proven ability to design, review and enhance multiple learning, teaching and assessment programmes.
C8 Ability to communicate complex or conceptual ideas to those with limited knowledge and understanding and develop early career academic colleagues.
C9 Continuing engagement with current practice and developing knowledge.
C10 Ability to contribute to broader leadership and management activities along with an awareness of current and future priorities of the University/College/School/Service.
Experience
Essential:
E1 Experience of planning and progressing work activities at the undergraduate and postgraduate level within Earth, Environmental, and Geographical Sciences, applying initiative and independent judgement.
For appointment at Grade 8:
E2 Experience and achievement in geosciences in an expanding personal academic portfolio.
E3 Experience of developing and demonstrating teaching and research methods and devising models, approaches, techniques, critiques and methods.
Salary will be Grade 7/8, £40,247- £45,163 / £49,250 – £56,921 per annum.
This post is full time (35 hours per week) is and open ended.
