Principal Engineer (E5) – Microsoft Applications

Location: Swindon / London / Northampton

Salary: Circa £115,000 per annum

The Retail Products portfolio is at the heart of Nationwide’s banking services, giving Nationwide’s members the banking, savings and lending products they need. We’re looking for a Principal Engineer with skills in Microsoft technologies to help our engineers excel.

While you might not be an expert in finance, you’ll have experience finding simple, practical solutions to software development challenges, and you’ll be able to inspire others to do the same.

As a Principal Engineer, you’ll bring together a diverse team of brilliant colleagues to figure out our systems development strategy over the next few years. For this is an exciting time to join Nationwide: we’ve moving at pace to consolidate and rationalise our systems, and you’ll be at the heart of this.

This role leads the teams responsible for our Originations services, the first point for members new to Nationwide. It also leads teams that maintain systems for our branch colleagues, helping them provide the legendary service for which Nationwide is famous.

At Nationwide we offer hybrid working wherever possible. More rewarding relationships are supported through our hybrid approach, bringing colleagues together across our UK wide estate, whilst also supporting generous access to home working. We value our time in the office to solve problems, to learn, and to feel connected.

For this job you\’ll spend at least two days per week, or if part time you\’ll spend 40% of your working time, based at either our Swindon, Northampton or London office. If your application is successful, your hiring manager will provide further details on how this works. You can also find out more about our approach to hybrid working here.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

With our Principal Architects, you’ll interpret the business and technical strategies for Retail Products and collaborate with your Lead Engineers to deliver improvements for service to members, colleagues and applicants. This will include close liaison with other senior leadership colleagues in our product areas as well as elsewhere in our technology groups.

Together with colleagues in our delivery functions, you’ll help your team construct robust plans and help shape the budget. Ultimately, you’ll be accountable for the quality of the systems that your teams will create. To do this, you’ll shape a roadmap that covers technical capability and you’ll identify the skills your teams will need to be successful.

You’ll work alongside two other Principal Engineers in the Retail Products leadership team. Although we don’t expect this to be a hands-on role, a background in Microsoft-centric development will help you provide context to your teams.

About you

We use the Microsoft .NET stack for much of our engineering effort, so you’ll have good knowledge of this technology. We would expect

  • Experience leading teams of software engineers
  • Skills building relationships with colleagues working in areas outside of technology
  • Demonstrable experience setting realistic goals for teams to achieve
  • Problem solving ability, able to bring consensus across disparate disciplines

Our Customer First behaviours are all about putting customers and members at the heart of how we work together. You can strengthen your application by showing the behaviours that resonate with you, and how you might have already demonstrated these.

When you work at Nationwide, you can experience that difference for yourself. You’ll be part of a high-performing, purpose-driven organisation that offers rewarding career experiences and a highly competitive range of benefits to match. You’ll also be joining us at an important time as we seek to reach more and more people in the UK. We want everyone in the UK to know that they don’t have to bank with a bank. They can choose a modern mutual instead.
