This is an exciting opportunity to join an innovative and dynamic team responsible for cancer diagnostic services across Surrey and Sussex. The Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance is a partnership that brings together leaders from different hospital trusts and other health and social organisations and covers a population of approx. 3.6 million people. Our aim is to improve the diagnosis, treatment, and care outcomes for cancer patients in Surrey and Sussex.

We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Programme Director to lead a large-scale transformation programme within the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance. The Programme Director will lead a range of projects that will improve and transform cancer services and outcomes for cancer patients across the alliance.

Main duties of the job

The Programme Director will work with system leaders from across all healthcare sectors to drive forward evidence-based and clinically led improvements and embed best practices within patient pathways. This role will work to identify issues and devise solutions across all stages of the patient pathway through primary care, diagnostics, treatment, and post-treatment.

You will develop an excellent relationship with clinical and administrative leadership and multi-disciplinary teams across the region to enable delivery of programmes of work that improve diagnostic services.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Central to delivering the cancer element in the NHS Long Term Plan, twenty Cancer Alliances are now established across England to deliver transformational change to improve cancer patient experience and clinical outcomes for the population across defined local geographies.

To support this ambitious agenda, the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance, (covering 3.2 million people), has successfully secured significant national transformation funding to review, redesign, and improve clinical services with a focus on earlier cancer stage diagnosis, shorter waiting times, and continuous improvements in holistic and equitable patient care.

As Programme Director, the post holder will work as part of a dynamic team in delivering an effective service supporting managers and staff across the Surrey and Sussex region.

Qualifications

  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent experience of working at a senior level in a specialist area.
  • Experience of project and programme management techniques and tools such as Prince 2 or Managing Successful Projects.

Knowledge and Skills

  • In-depth additional expert knowledge acquired over a significant period in improvement methodology and/or programme management and patient flow, ideally in an NHS setting.
  • Subject matter expertise across key areas relating to service improvement.
  • Proven and significant leadership experience and/or formal management qualification.
  • Understanding of current healthcare policy and its implications on engagement.
  • Appreciation of the relationship between the Department of Health, NHS England/NHS Improvement, and individual provider and commissioning organisations.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing and prioritising a large budget with solid working knowledge of financial processes.
  • Evidence of post-qualifying and continuing professional development.
