Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner (Plaster Technician)

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our dynamic Orthopaedic Team as a Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner.

Under the direction of a qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner, give support to patients and carers carrying out delegated clinical and therapeutic tasks as part of a multi-professional nursing team.

The Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner will participate in a training pathway to enable them to undertake formal training and accreditation as a qualified Orthopaedic Practitioner.

The Trainee Orthopaedic Practitioner will provide emotional and physical support to patients and document and record accurately all aspects of nursing/casting tasks undertaken, as delegated by the Orthopaedic Practitioner/Staff Nurse.

Band 3 Full time until qualified, then 1 year salary at Band 4 and then Band 5 after that.

Main duties of the job

Carry out a range of clinical skills under supervision and in accordance with agreed competency frameworks. This will include but not be exhaustive:

  1. Learn how to apply casts to patients as directed by Orthopaedic Practitioner, working towards the BOA/RCN(SOTN)/AOT Casting Techniques Certificate.
  2. Learn the correct way to hold limbs whilst a cast is applied.
  3. Application of casts/back slabs/splints and the use of the plaster saw for removal of cast under supervision by an Orthopaedic Practitioner.
  4. Develop, implement, and review plaster and wound care plans with individuals.
  5. Carry out aseptic procedures.
  6. Undertake simple dressings and obtain wound swabs.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Previous work in a caring environment
  • NVQ level 2 / 3
  • Competency specific skills

Knowledge & Skills

  • Relevant proven competency in basic nursing care in the Acute environment
  • Assist in clinics with other professionals
  • Awareness of safety issues / risk assessments
  • Knowledge of Orthopaedics and the plaster room
  • Understanding of hospital computer systems
  • Knowledge of the bones in the human body

Experience

  • To work within the requirements of the department
