Role Purpose

Are you ready to embark on an exciting journey with Direct Rail Services (DRS)? As a Train Person, you\’ll undergo comprehensive training to become a fully qualified Train Person, playing a crucial role in supporting DRS customer requirements and services. This is your chance to be part of a dynamic team, ensuring the smooth operation of rail movements across the country.

Principal Accountabilities

Key Areas:

  1. Train Preparation and Shunting Duties:

    • Be at the heart of rail operations, preparing and shunting trains to keep the wheels turning.
    • Ensure compliance with GE/RT 8000 and other essential documentation.
    • Follow company procedures and meet assessment criteria.
    • Work safely and efficiently, making a real impact every day.
  2. Compliance with Procedures and Instructions:

    • Perform your duties with precision and care, ensuring safety and accuracy.
    • Complete all necessary documentation promptly.
    • Maintain your competence through regular assessments.
    • Use the correct equipment and PPE for each task.
    • Be punctual and ensure all documentation is accurate and up-to-date.
  3. Traffic Examination and Shunting Activities:

    • Conduct thorough Traffic Examination checks to ensure everything runs smoothly.
    • Stay on top of your competency to arrange refresher checks as needed.
  4. Housekeeping and Safety:

    • Keep safety at the forefront, using the correct PPE and following procedures.
    • Maintain high standards of housekeeping in the workplace.
  5. Publications and Notices:

    • Stay informed by keeping all publications up to date.
    • Promptly acknowledge and update any amendments.
    • Be aware of new operational notices and changes.
  6. Training:

    • Embrace continuous learning by attending all required training courses.
    • Participate actively in exercises to hone your skills.
  7. Safety Policies:

    • Attend safety briefs and submit hazard/log accident book documentation promptly.
    • Take responsibility for your personal PPE.
  8. Security Requirements:

    • Understand and follow relevant risk assessments.
    • Always carry the correct ID/P4 on relevant sites.
    • Stay aware of security threat levels and report incidents promptly.
    • Obtain and retain safety-critical level security clearance.
  9. Driving Duties:

    • Drive road vehicles as required, ensuring compliance with company policies and speed limits.

Internal and External Relationships

  • Internal: Rail Division Senior Team, NTS Exec, Engineering, Commercial and Procurement, HSEQ, SAR, ICT, Finance, HR.
  • External: NDA and NDA Group, Commercial Customers and Suppliers, Network Rail, UK Government organisations, External bodies, Regulators, and other key stakeholders.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience Needed

Qualifications:

  • GCSEs or equivalent.
  • Must hold a Car Driver Licence.

Experience:

  • Experience in similar Train Person duties.

Knowledge:

  • Flexible working practices (shifts).
  • Rail industry knowledge.
  • Knowledge of DRS business.

Skills:

  • Ability to obtain a Personal Track Safety Certificate.
  • Ability to obtain RST.
  • Teamwork and independent working skills.
  • Adaptability to flexible working practices.

Other:

  • Medically fit to required standard.
  • Holds a full clean UK Driving Licence.
  • Must live within approximately 1 hour from the depot due to the safety-critical aspect of the role.
  • Undergo security checks and gain/maintain required security clearance.

Training & Development

  • Core: Manual Handling, Fire Awareness, Car Driving Assessment.
  • Systems: Electronic device.
  • On the job: All policies and procedures set by DRS.
  • Technical Training: As required for the individual and identified in the individual training plan.

Note: Duties may vary within the broad remit of the role and grade. Work location is subject to discussion with the immediate line manager and business requirements.
