Description
Trading and Risk Management forms part of Amber’s Procurement, Risk and Supply business unit, responsible for optimising energy costs for Amber’s clients, by trading in the wholesale gas and electricity markets. As Head of Trading and Risk Management, you will play an integral role in leading this area of the business and supporting Amber’s customers on their journey to reaching Net Zero, whilst also delivering real commercial value.
You will be responsible for the setting the strategic direction for Trading and Risk Management and accountable for day to day operations of the team, including developing market intelligence and bespoke trading strategies to manage each client’s exposure according to their risk preferences and business plans. This fast paced, customer centric role requires an exceptional leader who drives improvement in client experiences, develops new processes and systems, and enables continued high performance as Amber’s trading portfolio grows.
What will you be doing?
- Accountability for performance management and career development for all team members. Mentor and coach individuals to grow their trading and risk management capabilities, within an inclusive and supportive team culture, exhibiting strong leadership capability.
- Work closely with Sales and Account Management teams to secure new business for Amber, helping to present proposals that promote the benefits of flexible energy procurement and Amber’s innovative risk management approach.
- Ensure Trading and Risk Management services are well understood by new and existing clients, breaking down energy industry jargon, talking the language of the businesses that Amber supports and making the complex simple.
- Collaborate across a peer group of Amber leaders to deliver transformational projects that span multiple services and areas of delivery, ensuring continued business performance and growth.
- Leverage a comprehensive understanding of how energy procurement and trading fit into the holistic Net Zero journey to drive sustainable commercial results for Amber’s clients. Overlay B-Corp principles in decision making and prioritisation. Ensure that all client facing team members can provide consultative analysis, advice and recommendations that solve energy procurement challenges.
- Develop long term trading strategies for clients that strike a suitable balance of risk and opportunity whilst also incorporating optionality for renewable energy, Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), optimised shape/risk and other market features.
- Actively monitor positions for Amber’s growing portfolio of clients through analysis of markets and key risk metrics. Identify opportunities for proactive trading and execute strategies to ensure price and volume risks are mitigated. Take ownership of all client positions, ensuring strategies are agreed in a timely manner and Amber adheres to these strategies at all times.
- Work closely with clients, presenting to C-suite stakeholders in their organisations to provide regular position updates and detailed market analysis when required. Join face to face and virtual client meetings to discuss energy market trends and what this means for wider business strategies.
- Conduct high quality analysis to help Amber solve complex energy problems for its clients e.g. supporting on business strategy, contractual disputes, budget issues etc.

- You are an experienced people leader with a track record of building and maintaining high performance teams.
- You have previous experience in setting strategic goals and delivering transformative operational change within an organisation.
- You are an enthusiastic self-starter who enjoys working in a fast-paced environment. You are able to collaborate as part of the Procurement, Risk and Supply and wider Amber team to deliver results.
- You are an excellent analytical thinker, statistician and problem solver with strong attention to detail and outstanding numeracy skills. You are able to use data to tell a story, provide recommendations and drive improvements.
- You have extensive working in an analytical and/or technical role within the energy industry, including a comprehensive understanding of gas and electricity markets. You have experience of risk modelling and trading strategies.
- You have excellent interpersonal, negotiation and communication skills – both written and verbal. You are confident to share views, influence decisions and challenge where necessary.
- You are highly customer focused with the ability to develop and maintain strong client relationships. You are able to work collaboratively with senior client stakeholders to deliver innovative solutions for their businesses.
Desirable:
- Strong relationships with UK energy suppliers, consultancies and industry service providers.
- Experience of working with Energy Intensive Industries to optimise consumption and cost.
- Degree level educated in a relevant subject e.g. economics, finance, maths, statistics or risk management.
- Professional or higher qualification/s in a financial or risk management field.
- Strong modelling skills, including using MS Excel and having familiarity with coding / software development e.g. VBA, PowerBI, Python, SQL.
