Job Overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within Theatres to study as an Apprentice Operating Department Practitioner. This is a new and innovative route to acquire the knowledge, skills, and behaviours across different areas of perioperative care.

This 3-year course combines work-based and academic learning between The Royal Shrewsbury and The Princess Royal, Telford Hospitals, and Staffordshire University, where you will study for the Operating Department Practice (Degree Apprenticeship) – BSc (Hons).

During the Apprenticeship, you will develop skills and knowledge to work in today’s dynamic healthcare environment. While allocated to the Operating Department, you will also experience working across internal and external clinical placements to gain wider experience, meeting the standards for Operating Department Practice.

Applications are encouraged from Nursing Associates, Assistant Practitioners, Health T Levels & Health and Social Care students, & HCA\’s. Other health care professions will be considered. Work experience within Theatres is preferred and visits are encouraged. Evidence of recent study and the ability to study at a higher level is essential.

You must meet the minimum eligibility requirements to apply:

• Can be any age post full-time education (16+)
• Cannot already be on an Apprenticeship or any Government funded training
• Cannot have a qualification at the same or higher level in the same vocational area.
• Has been a UK resident for 3 or more years.
• Meets the eligible and valid residency status and permission to work in the UK criteria in Annex A of the linked funding document.
• PLEASE NOTE: If you have a visa, it must be valid for the entire length of the apprenticeship.

Main duties include working with each other to maintain patient safety, providing skilled care, and helping during each stage of the patient’s journey through the operating theatre in anaesthetics, surgery & post-anaesthetic care.

As part of the course, you will be required to:

• Deliver high-quality, compassionate care under the supervision of a Registered ODP / Nurse.
• Complete all educational elements of the programme as specified by SaTH, University of Staffordshire, and the Institute of Apprenticeship standards.
• Work as part of the operating department team, focusing on the patient’s needs.
• Work with a Practice Educator / supervisor, developing competence during placements and academic study, maintaining evidence of learning.
• Demonstrate flexibility and a proactive attitude to work and studies.
• Adhere to SaTH policies, procedures, values, and behaviours.
• Use HCPC standards of proficiency and conduct to guide your learning.

Working for your organization

The role involves working at The Princess Royal Hospital in Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, covering a range of surgical specialties and emergency services. You will join a proactive, dynamic, multidisciplinary team committed to high standards of perioperative care.

Eligibility (apprenticeship):

• Must hold Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE, Functional Skills, or equivalent).
• Provide evidence of highest qualifications achieved.
• Be able to live and work in the UK.
• If a visa is required, it must cover the entire duration of the apprenticeship.
• Not be on any other funded training.
• Have lived in the UK continuously for the 3 years prior to start.
• Be employed for at least 30 hours/week with employer support.
• Have a contract covering the entire apprenticeship.

The apprenticeship covers topics across three years, including perioperative care, research methods, leadership, emergency care, and more, leading to a Level 6 Degree in Operating Department Practice from Staffordshire University.
